Abstract
A process for making free-flowing enzymecontaining detergent granules comprises: (i) rendering the surface of base detergent granules which range in particle size from 0.075 mm. to 3.3 mm. and pass through a Tyler Standard 6 mesh screen and are retained on a 200 mesh screen and have an average bulk density of from 0.2 to 0.8 gm/cc, glutinous with from 3 to 90% by weight of said base detergent granules of a nonionic surface active agent which liquefies between 110 F. and 200 F. is solid at temperatures below 110 F. and is soluble in aqueous solutions and (ii) conglutinating with the glutinous surfaces of said base detergent granules, to form finished granules, from 0.001 to 40% by weight of the finished granules of active enzymes, said enzymes being in powder form and being substantially pure active enzymes or being included in enzyme compositions, said enzymes being active in the pH range 4 to 12 and the temperature range 50 to 185 F. Enzymes include hydrases, oxidoreductases, transferases, desmolases and isomerases and preferred enzymes are the hydrolases, e.g. proteases, esterases, carbohydrases and nucleases. The base granules can consist solely of builder salts or they can contain a combination of builder salts and organic detergent compounds the builder salts are preferably anhydrous or partially hydrated. The usual detergent additives which enhance attractiveness, and effectiveness may be included in the base granules.
