Abstract
Novel compounds of the general formula (and acid addition salts thereof), wherein R 1 is hydrogen or alkyl, R 2 is alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, R 3 is alkyl and one of R 4 and R 5 represents hydrogen, the other representing hydrogen or halogen or alkyl, are prepared: (i) by cleaving a quaternized N - alkyl - 5,11 - methyleneimino- 10,11 - dihydro - 5H - dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene (ii) by alkylating, alkenylating or alkynylating compounds corresponding to those illustrated above in which R 3 is hydrogen and R 2 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl or (iii) by the interaction of an amine, NHR 2 R 3 , and, for example, the appropriate 5-halomethyl - 5H - dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene (the latter reactant may be replaced by corresponding compounds containing ester groups in place of the halo atom). Therapeutic compositions showing anticonvulsant activity contain as the active ingredient the above novel compounds and may be administered enterally or parenterally.
