Abstract
Novel acrylic acid derivatives having the general formula R 1 R 2 C =CR 3 -COOH wherein R 1 is a phenyl group which may optionally be substituted by an alkyl or alkoxy group or an alkyl group containing at least two carbon atoms or, when R 2 is an aralkyl or thienyl group, a methyl group R 2 is a phenyl group substituted by an alkyl or alkoxy group, an alkyl group an aralkyl or thienyl group or, when R 1 is a phenyl group, a phenyl group R 3 is an alkyl group containing at least 3 carbon atoms or, when R 2 is a substituted phenyl group or an alkyl group, an ethyl group and also novel acrylic acid derivatives of the said general formula wherein R 1 is as defined above, R 2 is a phenyl group which is substituted by an alkyl or alkoxy group, an alkyl group or a benzyl or thienyl group and R 3 is an alkyl group containing at least two carbon atoms and non-toxic salts thereof are prepared by saponification of an ester of the acrylic acid derivative with an alkali, followed by optional salt formation. Pharmaceutical compositions having choleretic activity comprise at least one acrylic acid derivative of the above general formula or a non-toxic salt thereof together with a pharmaceutical carrier or excipient.
