Abstract

In a self-locking connection, e.g. between a filler gun and the filler socket of a pit prop, the nozzle of the gun has a passage 4 opening into bores 4a and carries an 0-ring and a lip-seal 7, and the socket 11 includes a recess 11c communicating with a pipe 17 normally closed by a non-return valve 15 and connected to the cylinder of the prop. On insertion of the nozzle into the socket an annular chamber 19 is formed and pressurized liquid introduced into the chamber opens the lip 7a of the seal to urge the lip against the tapered wall 13 of the socket, the pressure of the liquid thrusting the nozzle to the right as seen in the Figure and into contact with the base 11d of the socket. In modifications, (a) the socket is formed as a sleeve having a ring of holes which open into a throat externally of the sleeve and communicating with the pipe 17, (b) the sleeve constituting the socket is surrounded by a lip seal which normally closes the ring of holes and replaces the valve 15, and (c) the lip seal 7 is located in and at the entrance of the socket and co-operates with a throat formed in the nozzle.
