Abstract

An insulated cargo container carried successively by at least two of the following modes of transport-road, rail and sea-has an air inlet and an air outlet arranged to correspond to air supply and return ducts in the transporting vehicle inflatable seals being provided around the junctions of the ducts with the container. With this arrangement the container is removably coupled with an air-conditioning unit, the unit being part of the vehicle. The air makes a single pass over the cargo. The container comprises inner and outer walls with the gap between filled by pouring in foamed polystyrene, the inner walls and floor may be corrugated and a perforated bulkhead may be provided adjacent the air inlet. Two containers may be mounted on a railway car with the unit mounted between them. When used in a ship's hold the container inlet and outlet are connected to plenums connected to the ship's refrigeration system and several zones may be provided at different temperatures and having different atmospheres. A booster fan may be provided in each container. Support means to locate the containers is provided in the ship's hold. The air may be heated to keep the cargo at a temperature just above freezing. An hydraulically controlled damper may control the air flow.
