Process for the synthesis of dihydrodibenzocycloheptene compounds of the general formula ** (See formula) ** where R1 and R2 represent hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, R1 with R2 represents an oxo, imino or thio group, R3 represents hydrogen or alkyl and R4 and R5 represent hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, trifluoromethyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, acyl, sulfamyl or alkylsulfamyl, as well as ketals and acid addition salts of these compounds, characterized by cyclizing a compound of the general formula ** (See formula) ** where R3, R4 and R5 have the meaning already stated, by reaction with a cyanogen halide, carbonic acid halide, carbonic acid ester, carbon disulfide, aldehyde or ketone, with formation of an oxazolidinic ring, after which, if desired, the obtained compounds are ketalized and/or they are converted into acid addition salts.
