Abstract
A core access assembly for a reactor comprising a moderator core including fuel element containing channels, in which guide passages extending from a group of fuel channels merge into a single passage adjacent a wall of the pressure vessel, preferably concrete, the single passage extending through said wall a train of fuel elements are joined together in each channel and have attached to them a connecting member which passes through the guide channel, and, together with other connecting members of the group, passes through the passage in the pressure vessel wall the connecting members have flexible portions at intervals along their lengths and aro of such a crosssection within the wall passage as to provide room therein for a fuel element being withdrawn or loaded by any one of the connecting members. The core 2 is surmounted by a steel and graphite neutron shield 6 and a grid 7 of mild steel. The group may comprise four (Fig. 2) or six (Fig. 3, not shown) fuel channels. The parts 9a of the connecting members may carry thermocouple leads, coolant coupling pipes and gag drive equipment to enable the gags 15 to be moved to adjust the gas coolant flow in individual channels. The assembly may be modified for bottom loading and unloading.
