Abstract
A device for taking successive samples of a liquid circulating at a constant flow rate comprises an accumulator chamber 1 connected by a pipe 4 to a measuring chamber 2 which communicates, via a pipe 7, with a mixing chamber 3, and a siphon pipe 13 connected to the mixing and accumulator chambers and with atmosphere via a pipe 14 and valve 15, the mixing chamber being connected via a pipe 8, restriction 9, two-way valve 10 and a pipe 11 with a source of vacuum 12 or with atmosphere the measuring chamber 2 is connected with atmosphere via a pipe 5 and valve 6. In operation, both valves 6 and 15 are closed and the valve 10 operated to connect the system to the vacuum source 12 thereby raising liquid into the measuring chamber and part-way up the pipe 7 the valves 6, 10, 15 are then opened to atmosphere as shown thereby allowing excess liquid in the measuring chamber to flow back to the accumulator 1, the measured quantity left in chamber 2 being determined by the entry position of the pipe 4 into the latter chamber. Valve 15 is then closed and the valve 10 operated to connect the pipes 7, 8 with the vacuum source thereby raising the liquid in the measuring chamber into the mixing chamber 3 the above procedure may be repeated several times in order to fill the chamber 3 with a number of measured quantities. A sample of the liquid in the chamber 3 is then removed from the chamber 3 by means e.g. of a sample withdrawing needle. In order to return the liquid in the chamber 3 back into the accumulator chamber 1, the valves 6, 10 and 15 are actuated in such a way as to produce a pressure differential between the interiors of pipes 8 and 14 thereby causing the liquid to be siphoned, via the pipe 13, back into the chamber 1. The liquid in the chamber 3 may be agitated by compressed air of mechanical means and the valves 6, 10, 15 actuated by a programmed control device.
