Abstract

A device for grinding knives, scissors or similar tools comprises a grinding wheel 3 which has an end face forming a grinding surface, is axially depressable against the action of a spring 7, and forms part of the bottom of a trough, the walls la, 1 of which form supporting surfaces for the tools to be ground and are separated from the grinding wheel by a ventilating gap 4. The walls 1a, 1b are formed on a support 1 having a circular aperture for the grinding wheel 3 which is secured to the upper surface of a cup-shaped member 6 abutted by one end of the spring 7. The member is slidable on a lower cup-shaped member 9 forming an abutment for the other end of the spring and secured to a driving shaft 10 in a bearing 13. The side wall of the member 6 is formed with helical fan blades to produce an air current passing through the gap 4. In operation, the tool to be ground is placed on one or other of the surfaces 1a, 1b and moved to depress the grinding wheel against the spring 7, the bottom of the groove determining the maximum grinding pressure. In another embodiment, the grinding wheel is supported on an outwardly extending flange of the member 6 and centred by a projection on the member, and the fan blades are formed on a sleeve-like member shrunk on to the member 6.
