Abstract

A procedure for the preparation of optical whitening compounds of the general formula **(See formula)** (where R represents a substituted or unsubstituted alcohol group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and X and Y each represent a hydrogen or chlorine atom, at least one of X and Y representing a chlorine atom), and water soluble salts thereof comprising the steps of (a) replacing a chlorine atom of cyanuric chloride by reaction with an aliphatic alcohol - of formula ROH, (in which R is defined above), (b) replacing another chlorine atom of cyanuric chloride by reaction with a substituted aniline of the formula **(See formula)** (where X and Y are defined above) and (c) replace the third two-mole chlorine atom of cyanuric chloride by reaction with 4.4'-diaminoestilbene-2,2'-disulfunic acid, carrying out operations (a), (b) and (c) in any desired order, and then if one wishes to convert the compound thus formed into a water-soluble sol thereof.
