Abstract

Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0992168/C2/1> (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, a C1-5 alkyl group, or an aryl, aralkyl or alicyclic group) and their acid addition salts are prepared by reacting ethylene oxide with a nitroimidazole of the general formula <FORM:0992168/C2/2> in solution in a liquid medium containing or consisting of at least one organic acid which is a solvent for the nitroimidazole, and recovering the 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-5-nitroimidazole product from the reaction mixture in the form of the free base or an acid addition salt.
