Abstract

A process for desulphurizing a metal (e.g. pig iron) comprises depositing powdered calcium carbide (grain size of 0.5-1 mm.) on the surface of the melt and then blowing an inert gas (nitrogen or argon) into the melt. This causes thorough mixing of the particles with the melt and is described as being capable of removing up to 92.5% of the sulphur in a melt.
