Abstract

The invention comprises 1-phthalidyl-1,2,3,4,-tetrahydroisoquinolines of the formula: <FORM:0948785/C2/1> and their acid addition salts wherein R represents an aryl radical substituted by one or more alkoxy radicals and if desired, by a hydroxyl radical or an N-containing heterocyclic radical of aromatic character and the preparation thereof by esterifying the corresponding 5-hydroxymethyl-tetra hydroisoquinoline with an acid halide or anhydride of an acid R.COOH. Where the residue R contains a free hydroxyl group (e.g. R.CO- is a syringoyl residue) the free hydroxyl group is protected as the ester and subsequently liberated. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise the compounds of the invention together with an inert carrier. The compositions depress the cough reflex and act on the central nervous system.
