Abstract
Water-insoluble anthraquinone dyes are made by heating a tetrahalogenated 1 : 5- or 1 : 8-diamino-anthraquinon or a mixture thereof with concentrated sulphuric acid or oleum in the presence of boric acid or boron trioxide. When oleum is used at least one mol. of boric acid or boron trioxide must be used per mol. of sulphur trioxide. The process may also be conducted by halogenating the diaminoanthraquinone in concentrated sulphuric acid and then carrying out the heating step without isolating the halogenated diaminoanthraquinone. The products contain halogen and it is believed that during the heating step predominantly a -halogen atoms are exchanged for hydroxyl groups or sulphated hydroxyl groups. The product may be fractionally precipitated from the reaction mixture by successive dilutions with water to obtain dyes containing lower or higher contents of halogen. Examples are given. The dyes dye polyester fibres from aqueous dispersion in blue shades. Specification 787,379 and German Specification 110,769 are referred to.
