Abstract
The invention comprises magnesium glutamate hydrobromide and its monohydrate, and the preparation thereof by (a) neutralizing glutamic acid hydrobromide with magnesium oxide or hydroxide or a basic salt of magnesium (e.g. the carbonate) or (b) neutralizing magnesium glutamate with hydrobromic acid. Starting from glutamic acid itself, these processes may be effected as follows: (a) glutamic acid is reacted with a stiochiometric proportion of hydrobromic acid, the hydrobromide is crystallized at -10 DEG C. and dissolved in water, the pH of the solution is adjusted to as close as possible to 6 by addition of the basic magnesium compound, and magnesium glutamate hydrobromide monohydrate is crystallized slowly therefrom at a temperature below 0 DEG C. (b) a solution of glutamic acid is adjusted to pH 6.0-6.5 by addition of magnesium oxide or hydroxide or a basic salt of magnesium, filtered and a stoichiometric quantity of hydrobromic acid added slowly to the agitated filtrates and the desired product is thereafter crystallized as in (a).
