EL GRUPO AMINO SE PUEDE ENLAZAR A CUALQUIER CARBONO DE ALCOHOL AZUCARADO DE CINCO O SEIS CARBONOS. LA FORMULA GENERAL DE LOS MONOMEROS SE DA A CONTINUACION. ESTOS MONOMEROS SE SINTETIZAN POR REACCION DEL GRUPO AMINO DE UN ALCOHOL AZUCARADO CON UN DERIVADO ACTIVADO DE ACIDO ACRILICO O METAACRILICO, TAL COMO CLORURO DE ACRILOIL O CLORURO DE METACRILOIL. LOS MONOMEROS REPRESENTADOS POR LA FORMULA GENERAL ANTERIORMENTE MOSTRADA HAN SIDO POLIMERIZADOS MEDIANTE UN RADICAL LIBRE DE POLIMERIZACION, SOLO O CON OTROS COMPUESTOS Y MATERIALES TENIENDO DOBLE ENLACE POLIMERIZABLE. LOS POLIMEROS ASI FORMADOS SON LINEALES O RAMIFICADOS (CON ENLACES CRUZADOS). LOS POLIMEROS DE ENLACE CRUZADO SE FORMAN CUANDO ENLACES CRUZADOS CON DOS O MAS DOBLES ENLACES SE PRESENTAN DURANTE LA POLIMERIZACION, Y EN ALGUNOS CASOS CUANDO SOLUCIONES CONCENTRADAS DE MONOMEROS SE POLIMERIZAN. LOS POLIMEROS DE ENLACE CRUZADO SE PREPARAN USUALMENTE EN FORMA DE GEL. EL GEL OBTENIDO ES OPACO O TRANSPARENTE, DEPENDIENDO DEL TIPO Y CANTIDAD DEL ENLACE CRUZADO. EL GEL HA SIDO POLIMERIZADO EN DIFERENTES FORMAS, P.EJ, BURBUJAS, FINAS LAMINAS, RODILLOS, BLOQUES,ETC. LA APLICACION MAS IMPORTANTE DE ESTOS NUEVOS TIPOS DE GEL SE HA ENCONTRADO EN SU USO COMO SEPARACION INTERMEDIA.
