Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a window fittings system, more specifically to the connecting rails of such system.
  • window fittings are used for a window with a fixed frame and a leaf rotatable and/or tiltable therein.
  • the window fittings contain an operating mechanism on the leaf for opening and closing the window by means of a rotatable crank with which the operating mechanism can be operated.
  • a window fittings system contains a number of functional components such as a lock, link arm, corner transmissions and connecting rails. These connecting rails are also referred to as rods.
  • Typical in aluminium window systems is that along the contour of the leaf an undercut fitting groove is provided in which the rods are mounted and are able to slide.
  • the rods transmit the movement of the operating mechanism from one component to the other.
  • Some rods can be provided with a locking cam that can cooperate with a locking point on the fixed window, whereby in the close position of the crank the locking cam on the leaf hooks into or behind the locking point on the fixed frame to keep the window closed, whereas in the open position of the crank the locking cam is retracted out of or from behind the locking point by the sliding movement of the rod on which the locking cam is mounted to be able to open the window.
  • the locking cams are mounted in the rod via drilled openings.
  • a disadvantage is that such openings need to be provided in advance in the rod in the suitable positions of the locking cams.
  • the rod can also be provided with openings in several optional positions in advance.
  • a disadvantage is that said openings then remain visible in places where no extra locking cams are necessary and may be a possible point of attack for a burglar.
  • the purpose of the present invention is to provide a solution to at least one of the aforementioned and other disadvantages.
  • the invention relates to a rod for inserting in a window fittings opening, whereby the rod has a modular geometry provided with one or several optional zones for mounting an option such as a burglar proof locking point, whereby an optional zone comprises a break-away zone which after being broken away forms an opening in the rod.
  • the break-away zone typically contains a break-away part that is connected to the rest of the rod via a thin-walled connection.
  • a thin-walled connection is a connection which at least partially has a thickness that is less than the thickness of the rod near the connection and/or a connection whereby the break-away part is only partially connected to the rest of the rod.
  • various options can be incorporated, such as a locking cam, a magnet for window monitoring and the like.
  • a rod according to the invention comprises a longitudinal median plane which on the longitudinal sides is in connection with lateral guides for guiding slidingly in an undercut fitting groove along the contour of the leaf of a window.
  • the rod is further provided with two legs on either side of the longitudinal median plane which along their longitudinal edges are connected to the lateral guides, whereby the legs together with the longitudinal median plane define a hollow space.
  • a chamber can be formed in the hollow space.
  • the one or several break-away zones are spaced in the longitudinal median plane.
  • the distances may or may not be fixed.
  • the geometry of the break-away zone consists of a circular opening which is filled with a break-away slice as break-away part, or in short slice.
  • the break-away zone or the break-away part and/or the thin-walled connection is made from another material than the rest of the rod, such that it tears easily and according to the established contour on breaking away said zone.
  • break-away zone or the break-away part and/or the thin-walled connection are made from another material than the rest of the rod, for example by 2C injection moulding.
  • the break-away zone or the break-away part is provided with a detailing in which a screwdriver, Torx key or other tool fit for breaking away the zone or the slice by a turning, pushing or tilting movement.
  • the break-away zone or the break-away part is broken away by bending said zone or part lightly and pushing on the break-away zone or the break-away part with one's thumb at the same time.
  • the break-away zone is located on the level of a chamber in the rod, whereby the chamber is situated between the aforementioned legs of the rod, more specifically on the side of the rod which is oriented away from the opening of the groove in mounted condition.
  • the break-away zone is provided with an elevation which extends in the chamber of the rod between the legs and whereby the elevation extends over the entire or practically entire depth of the chamber preventing, in mounted condition of the rod in a fitting groove, that a break-away zone is broken away in the event of a burglary attempt.
  • Said elevation does indeed prevent the break-away zone from being pressed deeply, stopped by the base of the fitting groove in which the rod is slideably applied.
  • the aforementioned chamber in the rod, after breaking away the break-away zone, is provided for receiving a socle which forms the base of the option to be mounted in the optional zone, whereby the option is formed by a protrusion of the socle that protrudes outwardly through the opening of the broken away zone.
  • the option and the socle are separate from each other initially, such that the base can be used for different options.
  • the chamber or the socle is provided with plastically deformable ribs which are configured such that the option, at least temporarily, is held in place when sliding the rod into a window leaf.
  • the socle of the option extends in the chamber of the rod over the entire or practically entire depth of the chamber, which prevents unintentionally breaking away the option.
  • the invention also relates to a method for mounting a rod and an option, the method comprising the following steps: a) breaking away the break-away zone or opening in which the option needs to be mounted, b) pushing the option through the opening, and c) sliding the rod into a fitting groove of the leaf.
  • One advantage is that no openings are visible in locations where no extra options or locking cams are necessary. An opening in the rod can indeed be a possible point of attack for a burglar.
  • the optional zone cannot be broken away after mounting, that fewer different components are required due to the modularity and that it is not necessary to measure where an opening needs to be made. Further, no special tools or even any tools are necessary for breaking away the optional zone.
  • the rod shown in figures 1 to 5 has a substantially vaulted form with a substantially U-shaped cross-section as seen best in figure 5 .
  • the shown rod 1 contains two parallel legs 2 which define an open space 3 and which along their longitudinal edges are provided with lateral guides 4 for guiding slidingly in an undercut fitting groove 5 of a leaf 6 of a window 7 as shown in figures 12 to 14 .
  • the rod 1 has a substantially vaulted form with a substantially U-shaped cross-section but comprises more generally rods 1 as shown in figures 15 a) to f) comprising a longitudinal median plane which along the longitudinal sides is in connection with lateral guides 4 for guiding slidingly in an undercut fitting groove 5 along the contour of the leaf 6 of a window 7.
  • the rods shown in figures 15 a), d), e) and f ) are provided with two legs 2 whereby the legs, together with the longitudinal median plane, define a space 3 which may or may not be partially hollow.
  • the rod 1 has a modular geometry which is provided with optional zones 8 for mounting an option 9 such as a locking cam or the like.
  • optional zones 8 for mounting an option 9 such as a locking cam or the like.
  • two such optional zones 8 are provided in the shown part of the rod 1. However, this number may differ, whereby there is at least one.
  • a chamber 10 is delimited by two transverse ribs 11 at a distance from each other, seen in the longitudinal direction of the rod 1.
  • Each optional zone contains a break-away zone 12 which is formed by a break-away part which in the example is a circular slice which in the base 13 of the rod 1 is delimited by a break-away weakening 14 along the contour of the slice.
  • the weakening 14 is, for example, formed by a thin-walled peripheral zone which is connected to the base 13 of the rod 1.
  • the present invention is not limited to embodiments whereby the thin-walled connection is formed by a uniformly weakened peripheral zone connected to the base of the rod.
  • Alternative examples of thin-walled connections are shown in figure 16 . More specifically, figure 16 a ) shows a thin-walled connection 14 formed by a uniform weakened peripheral zone connected to the middle part of the rod.
  • Figure 16 b shows a thin-walled connection 14 formed by applying circular segment-shaped deepenings in the connecting zone between the break-away part and the rest of the rod.
  • Figure 16 c shows a thin-walled connection 14 formed by applying circular segment-shaped perforations in the connecting zone between the break-away part and the rest of the rod, whereby the break-away part is only partially connected to the rest of the rod.
  • Figure 16 d shows a thin-walled connection 14 formed by applying perforations in the connecting zone between the break-away part and the rest of the rod, whereby the break-away part is only partially connected to the rest of the rod.
  • the rod 1 is, for example, made of synthetic material such as a glass fibre reinforced polyamide.
  • the break-away zone 12 and/or the thin-walled peripheral zone 14 can be made from another material than the rest of the rod 1, but preferably are made from the same material.
  • the break-away zone 12 is provided with an elevation 15 which extends between the legs 2 in an aforementioned chamber 10 over the entire or practically entire depth A of the chamber 10, all this such that in mounted condition of the rod 1 in a fitting groove 5, the elevation 15 extends up to, or practically up to, the base 17 of the fitting groove 5.
  • the elevation 15 is provided with a detailing 16 in which a screwdriver or other tool fits to, for example, break away the break-away zone 12 with more force and ease.
  • the option 9 has the form of a mushroom-shaped locking cam which is applied through the opening 18 as shown in figures 9 to 12 , whereby a section 9a of the option 9 protrudes from the rod 1 on the opposite side of the open space 3 of the rod 1.
  • the option 9 is made as a two-piece component with a socle 9b that fits in the relevant chamber 10 and the locking cam 9a detachably applied therein or thereon.
  • the socle 9b is configured to hold the option 9 in place and under load transfer the forces to the rod 1 and the fitting groove 5.
  • the chamber 10 and/or the socle 9b are provided with deformable ribs 19 which are configured such that the option 9, at least temporarily, is held in place when sliding the rod 1 into a window leaf and thus cannot detach from the rod in this way.
  • the transverse ribs 11 extend over the entire or practically entire depth A of the chamber 10, such that in the mounted condition of the option, as shown in figures 12 and 13 , there is no or little range of movement between the option and the base 17 of the fitting groove 5 to push the option 9 out of the opening 18 of the rod 1 in the event of a burglary attempt.
  • An optional zone 8 is mounted as follows: The break-away zone 12, in which the option 9 is mounted, is torn out. This could be done easily by means of a classic tool to make a turning, pushing or tilting movement, but can also be done by lightly bending the rod 1 while exercising pressure on the optional zone with a finger.
  • the protruding section 9a of the option 9 is subsequently pushed through the opening 18 in such a way that the section 9a comes through the opening and the socle 9b of the option 9 falls in the underlying chamber 10.
  • the socle 9b is temporarily held in place with small ribs 19 which elastically and/or plastically deform when pushing the socle 9b in the chamber 10 by exerting light force.
  • the rod 1 together with the option 9 can be slid into the fitting groove 5 without any risk of the option falling out during mounting.
  • Figure 14 shows the cross-section of the option 9 with a locking peg in the form of a locking peg 9a in mounted condition in a window 7 in closed condition, whereby the locking peg 9a is enclosed in a locking point 20 which is located on the fixed frame 21 of the window opposite from the locking peg 9a 7.
  • any other option 9 can be mounted on predetermined places with a break-away zone 12.
