Definitions
- the present invention relates to a retractable seat particularly for a motor vehicle.
- a minivan or station wagon can carry up to seven or eight passengers or can have a flat floor that can then load bulky objects.
- the seats fitted to this type of vehicle may have an armature allowing as needed to place the seat in deployed configuration in which a passenger can sit in the seat or retracted position in which the seat is folded.
- the seat can be folded over the floor or can be folded into a bowl in the floor of the vehicle.
- a retractable seat is therefore complex and must obey contradictory requirements.
- a retractable seat must provide satisfactory comfort to the passenger including having a seat sufficiently raised above the floor and having a folder which, in the deployed position, must be high enough.
- the seat in retracted configuration the seat must have the smallest possible footprint. In the case where the seat retracts into a bowl, it must fit fully into the floor without leaving any protrusions of any kind.
- the fittings are by nature bulky items that are necessary for comfort but, in return, contribute to the volume of the seat when it is retracted.
- the bowl in which the seat is retracted is shallow so that the compactness of the seat in the retracted position is obtained by lining thin and therefore at the expense of passenger comfort.
- an object of the present invention is to provide a retractable seat which is both compact in the retracted position and which provides a satisfactory comfort in the deployed position.
- the invention relates to a seat which, in particular, the backrest provides a higher level of comfort than the seats of the prior art.
- a specific feature of the retractable seats is the small thickness of their trim. But the thickness of the upholstery is the main factor in the comfort of a seat.
- the invention proposes a folder in two parts: namely, a primary reinforcement which constitutes the main structural part of the file and a secondary reinforcement which is able to pivot with respect to this primary reinforcement to create a space in which the Suspension slick can relax when a passenger sits on the seat.
- the invention proposes to dissociate the back of a seat in a primary part in which is housed a secondary portion which can pivot to angularly offset the primary armature.
- This angular offset is made with the greatest amplitude at the part of the seat that corresponds to the lumbar support zone. It is therefore at this crucial area for the comfort of the passenger that the secondary armature angularly deviates from the primary armature; this allows to create a space in which the tablecloth suspension can relax.
- the comfort in the lumbar area is defined in particular by the capacity of the seat to provide a travel to the slick.
- the seats of the prior art are devoid of this faculty since the suspension web can only relax in a limited way by the thickness of the backrest which, in a retractable seat, is reduced.
- the seat comprises at least one connecting rod which connects the proximal portion of the secondary armature to the seat which has a thrust action on the secondary armature in the direction of the primary armature when rotating the backrest towards the seat.
- the seat comprises two links arranged on either side of the secondary armature, which contributes to the good stability of the secondary armature.
- the connecting means are movable to allow the seat to move from an extended position in which the backrest is substantially in a vertical position and the seat is substantially oriented horizontally and a folded position in which the folder is folded on the seat.
- the seat thus defined can be housed in a small bowl; the invention allows in particular a great compactness in the vertical direction Z of the vehicle because the backrest is remarkably thin when the seat is in the retracted position.
- the connecting members of the seat and back include a front foot and a rear foot.
- the primary reinforcement comprises two lateral cheeks, at least in its proximal part, which frame the secondary reinforcement. These two cheeks make it possible to mask the angular deflection of the secondary armature which is maximum at the proximal part of the backrest.
- the secondary reinforcement receives a textile lining.
- the primary armature receives at its distal end a head support.
- the drawing schematically illustrates an embodiment of a seat according to the invention.
- the packing elements at Figures 1 to 4
- any rollover elements have been omitted to clearly show the frame of the seat according to the invention and the benefits thereof.
- the vehicle in which the seat according to the invention may be intended to be embedded may comprise a bowl formed in the floor.
- bowl means a cavity of generally parallelepiped shape in which the seat is retracted.
- the seat 1 has a seat 2 and a backrest 3, which are connected by a pivot link P1.
- the means for connecting the seat to the vehicle structure are constituted, in the case of the illustrated seat, by a front foot 4 which connects the front part of the seat 2 to the vehicle structure and by two rear connecting rods which connect the backrest 3 to the vehicle structure; this configuration is indicative of the seat connection means on the vehicle structure and it is quite possible to provide other embodiments of these connecting means in the context of the present invention.
- the front foot 4 just as each of the rear connecting rods 5 have at their ends pivot links which allow the seat to move from an extended position to a retracted position and vice versa.
- the backrest 3 of the seat has two parts articulated relative to each other.
- the backrest 3 comprises, on the one hand, a primary reinforcement 3a.
- This primary reinforcement 3a is preferably made of metal, steel or magnesium.
- the primary armature 3a supports the pivot connection P1 ensuring the connection with the seat 2 and the pivot links P2 ensuring the connection with each of the rear connecting rods 5. It can also be seen that the primary armature 3a can carry a head support 7 which, in the embodiment illustrated in the figure 5 or at figure 6 , is retractable.
- the primary armature 3a could also embark a winding mechanism of a safety belt.
- the primary reinforcement 3a ensures and embeds the essential functions of the file 3.
- the figure 5 shows that the primary reinforcement 3a can be provided with lateral cheeks 8; for reasons which will appear later, these two cheeks 8 have an overhang at the proximal portion of the primary armature 3a, that is to say its portion which is close to the pivot connection P1 of articulation of the backrest 3 on the seat 2.
- the backrest 3 also includes a secondary armature 3b which is inserted into the primary armature 3a.
- the secondary reinforcement 3b can take the form of a quadrangular reinforcement having two uprights and two crosspieces as shown in FIG. figure 5 .
- the secondary armature 3b receives a suspension ply 10.
- the suspension ply 10 may consist of metal wires spring as it appears on the figures 5 and 6 .
- the elasticity of the suspension ply 10 is at least partly provided by the crenellated form of the metal wires which can elongate when they are stressed by a passenger who takes place on the seat and who then resume their initial form when the solicitation ceases.
- the suspension web 10 could also be made of elastic textile.
- the two links 9 are positioned on the seat 2 in front of the pivot connection P1 which connects the seat 2 to the backrest 3. It should be noted that the rotation of the secondary frame 3b in a direction that would distance it from the primary armature 3a is made impossible. Indeed, in its part which is located beyond the pivot connection P3, the secondary armature 3b bears against the primary armature 3a which blocks the rotation of the secondary armature 3b.
- the seat 2 may comprise a metal frame 11 on which is fixed an elastic sheet 10 which may be of the same bill as that which is fixed on the secondary frame 3b.
- the figure 5 shows that elements of the backrest lining 13 and seat 14 can be reported respectively on the backrest 3 and the seat 2.
- the backrest 3 may comprise on its rear face a protection plate 15.
- the seat 1 is, moreover, provided with locking means which act on one or more of the pivot links so as to immobilize the seat in its deployed position.
- locking means which may have various well-known structures (toothed grains, hook etc. controlled by a strap) are not described further.
- the figure 1 shows a space 12 delimited by the primary reinforcement 3a and the secondary reinforcement 3b.
- the space 12 is fundamental for the comfort of the seat since it is this space that will allow to absorb the suspension web 10 when elastically deformed under the weight of a passenger.
- the figures 2 and 3 show the retraction during which the secondary armature 3b approaches the primary armature 3a; this approximation is caused by the two links 9 which push the secondary armature 3b against the primary armature 3a.
- the cheeks 8 have the effect of laterally protecting the angular deflection of the secondary armature 3b during the retraction and deployment of the seat.
- the secondary armature 3b In retracted position, the secondary armature 3b is parallel to the primary armature 3a and is extremely compact.
- the retraction of the seat is simultaneously accompanied by the folding of the base so as to obtain a seat that can be housed in a bowl of very small size.
- the front foot 4 and the rear connecting rods 5 pivot to occupy a horizontal position.
- the figure 6 reveals a frame 15 which can be directly placed in the vehicle.
- the connecting means allowing the secondary armature to angularly shift from the primary armature are constituted by a cam integral with the seat which, during the opening of the seat, pushes the secondary armature towards its deployed position and keep it in place.
- the reverse action is then provided by a spring element that has been compressed during deployment. It is also possible to leave free the rotation of the secondary armature in the direction of the retraction.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a retractable seat particularly for a motor vehicle.
Many vehicles are equipped with retractable seats; these seats make it possible to adapt the configuration of the cabin to the needs of the user.
For example, a minivan or station wagon can carry up to seven or eight passengers or can have a flat floor that can then load bulky objects.
To ensure this modularity, the seats fitted to this type of vehicle may have an armature allowing as needed to place the seat in deployed configuration in which a passenger can sit in the seat or retracted position in which the seat is folded. Depending on the architecture of the vehicle, the seat can be folded over the floor or can be folded into a bowl in the floor of the vehicle.
A retractable seat is therefore complex and must obey contradictory requirements.
Thus, a retractable seat must provide satisfactory comfort to the passenger including having a seat sufficiently raised above the floor and having a folder which, in the deployed position, must be high enough. In contrast, in retracted configuration the seat must have the smallest possible footprint. In the case where the seat retracts into a bowl, it must fit fully into the floor without leaving any protrusions of any kind.
To obtain the greatest possible compactness when the seat is in the retracted position, it is conventional to provide a retractable seat of thin fillings. The fittings are by nature bulky items that are necessary for comfort but, in return, contribute to the volume of the seat when it is retracted.
However, the bowl in which the seat is retracted is shallow so that the compactness of the seat in the retracted position is obtained by lining thin and therefore at the expense of passenger comfort.
In this technical context, an object of the present invention is to provide a retractable seat which is both compact in the retracted position and which provides a satisfactory comfort in the deployed position.
- a seat on which is articulated a backrest by a pivot connection, the backrest having a proximal end at which the pivot connection is positioned and an opposite distal end, and
- connecting the seat and back to the vehicle structure,
- a primary reinforcement connected to the seat and to the connecting
- a secondary armature on which is fixed an elastic suspension ply, the secondary armature being connected, (i) at the distal end of the backrest to the primary armature, by a pivot connection and (ii) at the level of the proximal portion of the backrest by connecting means allowing the secondary armature to angularly shift from the primary armature when the seat is in the deployed position to provide a space in which the suspension web can deform elastically when it is requested , and allowing the secondary armature to pivot towards the primary armature when retracting the seat.
Thus, the invention relates to a seat which, in particular, the backrest provides a higher level of comfort than the seats of the prior art. A specific feature of the retractable seats is the small thickness of their trim. But the thickness of the upholstery is the main factor in the comfort of a seat. To this problem, the invention proposes a folder in two parts: namely, a primary reinforcement which constitutes the main structural part of the file and a secondary reinforcement which is able to pivot with respect to this primary reinforcement to create a space in which the Suspension slick can relax when a passenger sits on the seat.
The invention proposes to dissociate the back of a seat in a primary part in which is housed a secondary portion which can pivot to angularly offset the primary armature. This angular offset is made with the greatest amplitude at the part of the seat that corresponds to the lumbar support zone. It is therefore at this crucial area for the comfort of the passenger that the secondary armature angularly deviates from the primary armature; this allows to create a space in which the tablecloth suspension can relax. The comfort in the lumbar area is defined in particular by the capacity of the seat to provide a travel to the slick. The seats of the prior art are devoid of this faculty since the suspension web can only relax in a limited way by the thickness of the backrest which, in a retractable seat, is reduced.
The additional features listed below are the subject of the dependent claims.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the seat comprises at least one connecting rod which connects the proximal portion of the secondary armature to the seat which has a thrust action on the secondary armature in the direction of the primary armature when rotating the backrest towards the seat.
Preferably, the seat comprises two links arranged on either side of the secondary armature, which contributes to the good stability of the secondary armature.
In one embodiment of the invention, the connecting means are movable to allow the seat to move from an extended position in which the backrest is substantially in a vertical position and the seat is substantially oriented horizontally and a folded position in which the folder is folded on the seat. The seat thus defined can be housed in a small bowl; the invention allows in particular a great compactness in the vertical direction Z of the vehicle because the backrest is remarkably thin when the seat is in the retracted position.
According to one possibility, the connecting members of the seat and back include a front foot and a rear foot.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the primary reinforcement comprises two lateral cheeks, at least in its proximal part, which frame the secondary reinforcement. These two cheeks make it possible to mask the angular deflection of the secondary armature which is maximum at the proximal part of the backrest.
In one embodiment of the invention, the secondary reinforcement receives a textile lining.
It can be expected that the primary armature receives at its distal end a head support.

By convention, the present description is made with respect to an XYZ reference frame linked to the vehicle having a longitudinal direction X with respect to which the terms "length", "forward", "rear", a transverse direction Y with respect to which are in particular used the terms "width", "lateral", "transverse" and a vertical direction Z, with respect to which are in particular used the terms "upper", "lower", "height". It is also stated that the seat parts which are symmetrically located on each side of the seat bear the same reference numbers.
It is specified that the vehicle in which the seat according to the invention may be intended to be embedded may comprise a bowl formed in the floor. By bowl means a cavity of generally parallelepiped shape in which the seat is retracted.
The means for connecting the seat to the vehicle structure are constituted, in the case of the illustrated seat, by a

- a pivot link P3 located at the distal portion of the
backrest 3, that is to say the furthest part of the connection which links the backrest to theseat 2; - two
links 9 located at the proximal portion of the folder. The tworods 9 are placed on either side of thesecondary armature 3b and are each provided with pivot links.

The cheeks 8 have the effect of laterally protecting the angular deflection of the
In retracted position, the
In the case of the seat shown in the figures, the retraction of the seat is simultaneously accompanied by the folding of the base so as to obtain a seat that can be housed in a bowl of very small size. The
It can be seen that, in the retracted position, the
If this implementation of the invention is particularly suitable for a seat of
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment described above by way of non-limiting example but on the contrary embraces all the embodiments if included in the scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
Thus, it could be envisaged that the connecting means allowing the secondary armature to angularly shift from the primary armature are constituted by a cam integral with the seat which, during the opening of the seat, pushes the secondary armature towards its deployed position and keep it in place. The reverse action is then provided by a spring element that has been compressed during deployment. It is also possible to leave free the rotation of the secondary armature in the direction of the retraction.
