Abstract

The device (1) has two juxtaposed printed patterns (2, 4) to cover a printed pattern (8), where each pattern is printed with an ink containing fluorescent pigments. Composition of the inks of the patterns (2, 4) is such that the patterns (2, 4) form an opaque filter under an UV ray for radiation emitted towards or re-transmitted by the pattern (8) to make the pattern (8) to remain invisible. The effect of filter is diminished or disappeared when a document is exposed to another UV ray (UV2) such that the pattern (8) appears in a color distinct from colors of the patterns (2, 4).

Description

Domaine de l'inventionField of the invention

The invention relates to devices intended to discourage the counterfeiting of valuable documents (securities, banknotes, etc.) or security documents such as identity documents, access cards to reserved areas, cards credit and others.

État de la techniqueState of the art

We know in particular by EP 0 265 323 and GG 2 189 800 documents having printed areas which, exposed to UV radiation, produce, by the use of fluorescent pigments, two areas of contrasting colors (green-red for example). The problem is that in general, users are content to check whether there is fluorescence or not, without authenticating the colors themselves. There is a loophole that well-equipped counterfeiters could circumvent.

We know by EP-1,179,808 a method for more accurate tracking of fraudulent documents. Thanks to the use of fluorescent pigments with carefully calibrated characteristics, when a document thus secured is successively subjected to two UV sources of different wavelengths, similar or dissimilar color patterns, allowing authentication, are obtained.

Résumé de l'inventionSummary of the invention

An object of the invention is to allow easy and reliable control of the authenticity of a document.

Another object of the invention is to use a simple technology to implement, but difficult or impossible to reproduce by potential counterfeiters.

The object of the invention is a document authentication device. This document carries at least two juxtaposed zones each printed with an ink containing fluorescent pigments. The composition of these inks is such that when the document is exposed to a first UV radiation, of determined wavelength, the at least two zones appear in an identical color for the human eye, whereas when the document is exposed to a second UV radiation (of another determined wavelength), they appear in distinct colors. These at least two juxtaposed zones each cover, at least partially, at least a third zone. This third zone is printed, too, using an ink containing fluorescent pigments. The composition of the inks of these at least two zones is established in such a way that they each form an opaque filter under the first UV radiation for the radiation emitted towards or retransmitted by the third zone, so that this at least one third zone remains invisible. This filter effect disappears or diminishes when the document is exposed to the second UV radiation, so that the third zone appears at this time in a color distinct from those of the at least two other areas.

According to a preferred embodiment, the patterns formed by the three zones do not appear distinctly from their background in ambient light.

According to an advantageous embodiment, the composition of the inks of the at least two zones is such that, under the first UV radiation (UV1), they form an opaque filter for the radiation reemitted by the at least one third zone.

According to another advantageous embodiment, the composition of the inks of the at least two zones is such that, under the first UV radiation, they form an opaque filter for the part of this radiation likely to reach the at least one third zone.

The authentication device of the invention advantageously comprises at least two third zones.

Another object of the invention is a security document which comprises at least one authentication device as described above.

Description détaillée de modes de réalisation particuliersDetailed description of particular embodiments

The Fig. 1 shows, in section, and in greatly exaggerated thicknesses, the general embodiment of the device of The invention 1. Two contiguous patterns 2.4 printed with inks of different compositions each containing fluorescent pigments are applied to a suitable support 6. An exemplary composition for the color of the pattern 2 is yellow / orange fluo, SICPA Yellowish red 20, SICPA White transparent 20, SICPA Bi-fluo yellow-orange 60] and for pattern 4 [Yellow fluo red, SICPA Yellowish red 20.0, SICPA White transparent 75.0, SICPA Colorless yellow fluo 1.5, SICPA Fluorescent yellow 2.0, SICPA Fluorescent red 1.5]. This support 6 may be a paper intended for the manufacture of paper money, authentic documents, plastic, etc. These patterns 2, 4 cover (in the example shown, completely) a third pattern 8, printed with an ink composition distinct from that forming the other two patterns, also including fluorescent pigments. In this case, the following composition can be used: Fluorescent white red, Sun Chemical White covering 50, SICPA Invisible fluo red 50]. Exposed to ambient light, such as Fig. 2 , the device 1 appears in any color (color A, rendered by a dotted line), for example in the form of a colored pellet. The device can also be hidden in an abstract pattern (see Fig.3 ) (here also, of color A) or not, printed on the support 6.

The Fig. 4 shows what happens when a document provided with the device of the invention is subjected to the radiation of an ultraviolet lamp 10 emitting in a first wavelength range (UV1): the two patterns 2,4, appear at the human eye in an identical phosphorescent color B (symbolically rendered here by horizontal hatching), the third motif remaining invisible.

The Fig. 5 shows what happens when the same document is irradiated with a second ultraviolet 10 emitting in a second wavelength range (UV2): each of the patterns 2, 4, appears in a different phosphorescent color (colors rendered by left or right oblique hatching). The third pattern appears in a third color (vertical hatching). The transition from a uniform color pellet to three distinct (and preferably violently contrasting) color zones is for the user an obvious proof of the authenticity of the document, while the technology necessary to render the same effects is totally out of the picture. scope of a counterfeiter even well equipped.

To obtain the desired effect, we use a relatively simple technology, but complex to implement:

It is indeed necessary to first adjust the composition of the inks constituting the units 1 and 2 so as to obtain the same color under UV1 radiation, which is already a difficult task for a possible counterfeiter.

Moreover, these inks must each comprise components blocking the passage of the radiation emitted by the pigments of the pattern 8 under the effect of the excitation due to a specific type of radiation, in this case UV1, but not blocking (or little) the radiation emitted by this same pattern 8 under the effect of another light source (UV2), so as to let this pattern 8, as shown in FIG. figure 5 . It should be added that this filter effect must be taken into account in order not to disturb the color balance obtained during the first test ( Fig.4 ), a balance to which he can contribute if necessary.

Potential counterfeiters are therefore confronted with a multitude of physical effects contradictory, which makes their task all the more difficult, for the greater safety of users.

It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the present invention is not limited to the examples illustrated and described above. The device of the invention may in particular be manufactured separately from the support 6 and be affixed to it by any transfer method, well known to those skilled in the art. The invention comprises each of the novel features as well as their combination. The presence of reference numbers can not be considered as limiting. The use of the term "includes" in no way excludes the presence of other elements other than those mentioned. The use of the definite article "a" to introduce an element does not exclude the presence of a plurality of these elements. The present invention has been described in relation to specific embodiments, which have a purely illustrative value and should not be considered as limiting.
