- Bone screws are objects of common use in surgery.
- the structures of the different types of such screws are now standardized and their manufacture is subject to precise constraints. It is known, in particular, that the quality requirements required for the threading of the rods of the screws lead to the use of the whirling technique, ie the cutting of the threads by means of internal teeth mills arranged eccentrically and with their axis oblique with respect to the axis of the stem.
- the structures of the screw heads are also standardized and require complex milling operations in a complicated geometry to ensure a secure coupling with the screw bit at the time of installation.
- the present invention proposes a solution to this difficulty. It enables the manufacture of standard long-bone screws on the bar at a conventional five-axis machining center, in a single cycle of programmed operations, succeeding one another automatically. The production times therefore reach minimum values.

- the end of the cone 4 carries a hollow pulley 8 provided with teeth 9 and having a tubular portion which covers the sleeve-shaped portion 6 of the envelope 7.
- the part 7 forms a circular receptacle 10 limited by the outer side wall of the part.
- a cylindrical piece 12 acting as hub, retained by screws 13, and whose outer surface carries rolling bearings 14 supporting and guiding a second hollow pulley 15 externally provided with teeth 16.

We see that for each plate, one of its vertices is prominent in the central bore so to cut the bar to thread as will be seen later. Another vertex protrudes in a radial clearance 2a of the cutter, and the third vertex is engaged in an elongate recess 2b formed in the rear face of the cutter.
- the rear face of the cutter comprises six cylindrical housings 3a in which the heads of the screws 3 are housed.
- the lateral face thereof comprises a series of grooves 20 in the form of a labyrinth, cooperating with a ring 21 ( Fig. 1 ) attached to the casing 7 and surrounding the cutter.
- the whirl head is shown in FIG. Fig. 3 attached to the body 25 of a spindle 26.
- a calibrated opening 23 constitutes an indexing means cooperating very precisely with a corresponding indexing means 24, 24a fixed to the body 25 of the spindle 26.
- the coupling member 17, with its slightly conical outer face tubular projection (according to HSK standard E40) and its bore having an inner groove engages and binds to the spindle drive shaft so that that the complementary indexing means 23, 24, 24a perfectly complement the isostatic mounting of the member 17 on the spindle while ensuring its drive.
- the Fig. 4 shows how, with the described head fixed to the spindle 26, a swirling operation is carried out on a rod 27 coming from a bar of material to be machined, driven in rotation and guided by a doll 28.
- the rod 27 is supported at its front end by a tailstock 29.
- the axis of rotation of the spindle 26 is inclined to that of the bar 27 by an angle corresponding to the angle of rise of the thread to be cut by the internal gear mill 1.
- this spindle is deported. laterally so as to fix the eccentric position of the cutter 1 with respect to the Bar 27.
- the diameter of the net is determined by this eccentricity of the swirling crown, therefore by the distance between the centers of the bar and the milling cutter.
- the cutter rotates at high speed around the threading bar. This is itself animated by a slow rotation synchronized with the axial advance of the tool which allows to define the pitch of the net.
- the portion of the whirl head shown in section at the Fig. 4 shows how the described compact construction allows the driving of the mill 1 by the toothed belt 19 with a minimum space ensuring the rigidity and accuracy of positioning, which ensures a high-quality manufacturing of bone screws.
- the rigid base 30 carries, on a bracket 31 which is rigidly connected thereto, the bar advance axis 28 already shown in FIG. Fig. 4 .
- This axis defines the X direction.
- the console 31 defines a horizontal plane parallel to the X axis. It guides an element 32 called a rear recovery unit capable of sliding in the X direction over a reduced stroke (U axis).
- This unit 32 can also rotate about a horizontal axis perpendicular to X (Y axis). It may be provided with a chuck or a return vice, but may also be provided with a counter-tip system as shown in 29 at Fig. 4 .
- the tailstock rod has clearance to prevent interaction with the swirl head due to the angle of inclination of the threads.
- the pin 26 provided with a simple strawberry. It is a mobile unit in four X, Y, Z, and B axes that need not be described in detail since they belong to a known machine.
- the spindle 26 and the recovery unit 32 are first brought into the positions of the Fig. 4 . Bar to be machined (not shown in Fig. 5 ) is advanced and its end provided by engagement in the tailstock 29. The threading of the screw is achieved by moving the pin 26 along the X axis. Then the pin 26 is disengaged.
- the whirling head separated from the spindle is reintroduced into a magazine (not shown) by means of a tool change arm; after which, the spindle being equipped with a cutting tool, the properly threaded bar segment 27 is cut at the unit 28.
- the milling of the screw head can be performed by a suitable tool mounted on the spindle motor shaft 26 during the same cycle of operations as that including the swirling. This operation can take place before or after the threading.
- the complete process can be controlled flexibly and fully automatically by programming the existing axes.
- the geometry of the swirl head makes it possible to machine a helix angle of the screw up to 28 °.
