Definitions
- the present invention relates to a portable device comprising a housing in which is disposed a first electrical module, and a bracelet attached to the housing, the housing comprising an upper part and a lower part which cooperate with each other to realize the assembly of the housing, a second electrical module being associated with the bracelet as well as electrical connection means providing an electrical connection between the first and second electrical modules through an opening in the housing, the first electrical module comprising at least one contact pad electrical capable of being connected to the electrical connection means.
- the present invention relates to such a portable device comprising means for establishing a contact of the electrical connection means with the first electrical module, inside the housing, removably.
- electrical connection means any conductor or set of conductors to provide an electrical connection between two electrical modules.
- electrical module means any device for providing or receiving a power supply and, where appropriate, to transmit or receive an electrical signal.
- the portable electronic device is made in the form of a portable electronic instrument in the form of a wristwatch having means for receiving, and possibly transmitting, radiofrequency type signals.
- the first electrical module comprises electronic circuits for processing electrical signals exchanged with the second electrical module, the latter comprising an antenna.
- the European Patent No. 0 631 341 describes an electronic instrument of the wristwatch type comprising an antenna housed in the bracelet and connected to electronic circuits for processing the signals received by the antenna.
- the electronic processing circuits are disposed inside the instrument housing on a printed circuit board. Connection pads are provided on a peripheral region of the printed circuit to enable the establishment of an electrical connection between the Antenna connection terminals and electronic processing circuits.
- the solution described in this document to provide the electrical connection between the terminals of the antenna and the connection pads of the printed circuit consists of using fixing screws passing through adapted openings formed in the terminals of the antenna, and screwed into the printed circuit at the connection pads.
- Such an embodiment makes mounting the bracelet and the antenna easier than in the previously described solution insofar as it is sufficient to plug the electrical conductor into an opening of the housing to establish the electrical contact.
- this solution also has drawbacks, in particular from the point of view of the durability. Indeed, the leaf spring is typically welded to the printed circuit, which must be done carefully to ensure sufficient mechanical strength compared to the perpendicular stresses that are exerted on the blade, once the electrical conductor is placed in support against her. It may further be noted that the contact surfaces between the blade and the electrical conductor are not protected, which can lead to problems of stability of the electrical connection, in particular due to possible oxidation of the free metal surfaces. In addition, this solution has a relatively large footprint and therefore can not be suitable for the realization of a small volume instrument.
- a disadvantage of such a solution proposed in the US Patent 4,947,179 is that it does not guarantee a good mechanical strength in time at the electrical connection between the antenna and the contact pad of the electrical module, and is not well isolated from environmental conditions.
- the object of the present invention is to improve the electronic devices of this kind so as to avoid the aforementioned drawbacks.
- the invention provides a portable device of the type indicated above, characterized in that the mounting of the housing ensures the establishment of an electrical contact, by compression, between said connection means and said contact pad.
- fixing means for holding together the lower and upper parts of the housing, such as screws for example, the implementation of these fixing means to ensure the maintenance of the electrical contact between the connection means and the contact pad.
- the second electrical module housed in the bracelet of the portable device can be disconnected from the first electrical module by simply disengaging the two parts of the housing. Indeed, the fact of spreading the two parts of the housing from one another can relieve the pressure respectively exerted on the connecting means of the second electrical module and the contact pad of the first electrical module.
- the portable electronic device is a wristwatch type instrument having communication means using radio frequency waves. It is therefore expected to house an antenna in the bracelet, connected to electronic processing circuit signals received by the antenna, these circuits being arranged in the instrument housing.
- electrical conductors are also provided to connect the two terminals of the antenna to the electronic processing circuits, the conductors being arranged through an opening in the instrument housing. During the installation of the antenna, regions of the electrical conductors are brought opposite contact pads arranged on a printed circuit carrying the electronic processing circuits.
- Means are then provided for compressing these regions of the electrical conductors against the contact pads during assembly of the lower and upper housing parts.
- connection means are provided for compressing the connection means against the contact pads.
- the embodiments described relate to a particular portable electronic device by way of non-limiting example, namely a wristwatch type instrument having at least radio frequency wave reception functionalities.
- the figure 1 represents a preferred embodiment of the strand 1 of the bracelet according to the present invention carrying the buckle 2 with its pin 3.
- the bracelet is obtained by molding plastic materials and has an external appearance of conventional type.
- the strand 1 shown has three main constituent elements.
- the strand 1 is obtained by an assembly of two "half-strands" in its thickness, a first internal half-strand 4 and a second external half-strand 5.
- the third constituent element of the strand is a reinforcing element 6, disposed at level of the end of strand 1 intended to be linked to the watch case.
- the reinforcing element 6 is made of a plastic material having greater rigidity than that of the materials chosen for the manufacture of the half-strands 4 and 5, so as to guarantee the strength of the connection between the housing and the strand 1.
- Holes 7 are provided in the reinforcing element 6 and in the inner half-strand 4 to receive fixing screws (not shown) of the strand 1 to the watch case.
- a lug 8 whose function will be explained later, is provided at the end of the strand 1 intended to be linked to the watch case.
- the lug 8 is made in one piece with the internal half-strand 4, by a conventional type of molding, and comprises a central hole 9.
- connection means 11 The free end 10 of electrical connection means 11 is apparent, the connection means leaving the strand 1 through the central hole 9 of the lug 8.
- connection means 11 are provided to connect in particular the terminals of an antenna (visible on the figure 2 ) disposed between the two half-strands 4 and 5 of the bracelet during their assembly.
- the connection means 11 comprise in particular conductive tracks (not shown) whose ends are shaped as contact pads 12, the tracks being carried by a flexible substrate 13.
- the figure 2 is a partial sectional view of the bracelet strand 1 assembled on the housing 20 of the instrument according to a first embodiment of the invention.
- the representation has been deliberately simplified in order to make more visible the particular characters of the present invention.
- the strand 1 comprises, between its two half-strands 4 and 5, a substrate 13 carrying an antenna 22.
- the type of antenna used is conductive track deposited on a flexible substrate in the form of a spiral.
- the housing 20 of the instrument mainly comprises an upper portion 23, or middle part, and a lower part 24, or bottom, the middle and the bottom being separated by a seal 25 sealing the housing 20.
- the housing is furthermore closed on the top by an ice 26, of conventional type and made for example of plastic or sapphire depending on the desired level of range.
- the middle 23 has an opening 27 on its side in which is inserted the lug 8 of the strand 1 bracelet. Therefore, the transverse dimensions of the lug 8 are preferably chosen slightly greater than those of the opening 27. Thus, the lug 8 is frictionally housed in the opening 27 and itself ensures the sealing of the housing at the opening level.
- This construction detail advantageously makes it possible to dispense with the use of an additional seal at this point to effect the introduction of the connection means 11 of the antenna 22 inside the housing 20. It is also possible to provide bead material (not shown) molded with the lug 8 to ensure sealing at the opening 27.
- the reinforcing element 6 has a thin portion 28 extending inside the central hole 9 of the lug 8, resting against the connection means 11 of the antenna, thus making it possible to guarantee a certain rigidity with the pin 8 whose possible deformations could be detrimental from the point of view of the tightness of the instrument. It may also be noted that the possible deformations of the lug 8 are likely to damage the antenna 22, which is avoided here.
- the peripheral portion 29 of the bottom 24 has a shape complementary to that of the end of the inner half-strand 4 intended to be fixed to the housing 20 of the instrument.
- the middle part 23 has a shape substantially complementary to that of the part of the strand 1 intended to be arranged facing the middle part 23.
- the strand 1 is wedged between the middle part 23 and the bottom 24.
- screws are provided for fixing the strand 1 to the housing 20. It may be noted that, according to a preferred alternative, these screws also pass through holes (not shown) formed in the bottom 24, at its peripheral portion 29, to allow mounting the housing 20.
- the housing 20 contains electronic circuits 30, in particular for controlling display means, schematized on the figure 2 by a liquid crystal screen 31, or LCD screen.
- the electronic circuits 30 may further comprise means for providing various additional functions, such as a watch movement of conventional type for example, to allow a display of the current time.
- a power source is provided (shown with reference 48 on the figure 5 ) to supply the various components of the instrument according to the invention.
- the electronic circuits 30 are furthermore electrically connected to a first electrical module 32 comprising, in the illustrated example, electronic circuits for processing the signals received by the antenna 22.
- the first electrical module comprises contact pads 33 intended to be brought into contact with the contact pads 12 of the antenna 22.
- the middle part 23 comprises a flange 34 having a shoulder 35 against which the LCD screen 31 is disposed in abutment.
- the electrical module 32 is disposed in abutment against the LCD screen 31, either directly or via additional elements (not shown), possibly of the spacer type.
- peripheral regions of certain components arranged in the middle part 23 abut against regions of the latter, as is the case for the electrical module 32 on the figure 2 .
- feet can be provided, of which only one 36 is shown schematically on the figure 2 , in particular to position the electronic circuits 30.
- the electronic circuits 30 are carried by a printed circuit board (not shown) having through holes in different locations, provided to cooperate with the positioning feet, such a structure being known.
- the foot 36 has a second function in addition to its conventional function of positioning the electronic circuits. Indeed, it is apparent from the figure 2 when the housing 20 of the portable device is mounted, the end 10 of the connection means 11 is compressed by the foot 36 against the contact pads 33 of the first electrical module 32.
- the simple assembly of the upper parts leads to the establishment of an electrical connection between a first and a second modules electrical means, that is to say here 32 electronic signal processing circuits and an antenna 22.
- a first and a second modules electrical means that is to say here 32 electronic signal processing circuits and an antenna 22.
- Specific means for establishing this electrical connection such as a weld or a screw are not necessary contrary to what is known from the prior art.
- the step of setting up such a means for establishing the electrical connection, when mounting the housing is advantageously eliminated.
- An additional advantage of the structure according to the present invention stems from the fact that the first electrical module 32 and the lug 8 of the bracelet, and therefore the end 10 of the connection means 11, are positioned with respect to a single reference namely Therefore, a good reliability in the arrangement of these components can be obtained during assembly, insofar as it does not depend on tolerances on the dimensions or the positioning of other components of the housing 20.
- the foot 36 it is preferably made at the same time as the bottom by molding plastic material, or even metal.
- it can be provided in the form of a tube on which is inserted by force an additional element whose face intended to come into contact with the end 10 of the connection means 11 is substantially flat and covers a surface at less than that of the contact pads 33.
- this additional element is elastic so that the aforementioned face can be deformed to ensure a good quality of contact between the connection means 11 and the contact pads 33.
- the figure 3 represents in perspective a portion of the portable device according to a second preferred embodiment of the present invention.
- This figure shows the strand 1 of the bracelet previously described in relation to the figure 1 .
- the strand 1 is ready to be put in place on the middle part 23.
- the middle part 23 comprises a plurality of guide surfaces 37 intended to cooperate with surfaces of the end of the strand 1 intended to be fixed to the housing 20. It can be seen in particular that the middle part 23 comprises a surface 38 of complementary section to about half that of the lug 8 and thus providing a radial guide function for the strand 1.
- the figure 3 also leaves, facing the guide surface 38, the opening 27 of the middle part 23 intended to receive the lug 8 of the strand 1 to allow the introduction of the connection means 11 of the antenna 22 into the housing 20 of the portable device.
- all the electronic circuits of the portable device are arranged on a printed circuit board 39, or PCB ("printed circuit board"), which is the case in particular of the first electrical module 32.
- PCB printed circuit board
- said circuits may comprise clock-type circuits to enable the portable device to present hourly functionalities in addition to its specific functionalities related to the means of communication by radio waves.
- FIGS. 4a to 4c better show the particular details related to the connection of the two electrical modules, namely the antenna and electronic circuits for processing the electrical signals received by said antenna.
- the figure 4a represents a view similar to that of the figure 3 of which a portion has been enlarged, the strand 1 of the bracelet being closer to the middle part 23.
- a spacer 40 has been added, resting on the PCB 39, its main function being to present a bearing surface 41, for the subsequent mounting steps, located in a plane substantially parallel to the PCB 39 plane and at a distance greater than the height of the highest electronic component carried by the PCB.
- the spacer 40 comprises a housing 42 whose function will be explained later, in connection with the description of the Figures 4b and 4c .
- the transverse dimensions housing 42 are substantially greater than the dimensions of all the contact pads 33 so as to allow the latter accessible through the housing.
- the end 10 of the connection means 11 has four contact pads 43.
- the second electrical module housed in the strand 1 may have a plurality of functions.
- two 12 of the contact pads 43 are used to connect the terminals of the antenna 22 to the electronic circuits disposed in the housing 20, while the two remaining contact pads 43 may be used to connect another component.
- charging means for a battery used as the power source of the portable device according to the invention and capable of establishing a conventional type of contact, ohmic, capacitive or inductive, with a adapted charger.
- charging means of the inductive type provision is made to provide a charging coil (not shown) further on the substrate 13, the ends of which are connected to the remaining contact pads 43.
- the Figures 4b and 4c present the establishment of a substantially parallelepipedal buffer 44 in the housing 42 of the spacer 40, after having disposed the strand 1 against the middle part 23, thus after having introduced the connection means 11 inside the housing 20.
- the buffer 44 preferably made of elastic material such as rubber for example, is simply deposited inside the housing 42, in superposition of the end 10 of the connection means 11.
- the latter has a thickness slightly greater than that of the spacer 40.
- the upper face 45 of the buffer that is the one that is not in contact with the connection means 11, is presented protruding from the support surface 41 defined by the spacer 40.
- FIG. figure 5 schematic sectional representation of the device which has just been described, once the bottom 24 is mounted on the middle part 23, provides a better understanding of the function of the buffer 44.
- the general structure shown in FIG. figure 5 is similar to that shown on the figure 2 therefore the description of the common elements between these two figures will not be repeated for the figure 5 .
- the PCB 39 carrying electronic components, whose first electrical module 32 is here electronic circuits for processing the signals received by the antenna 22.
- An intermediate spacing element 46 is disposed between the LCD screen 31 and the PCB 39 to ensure a sufficient height between these two elements and to allow the arrangement of the components, such as the schematized module 47, on the PCB 39 in the intermediate space thus defined.
- connection means 11 introduced into the housing 20 through the opening 27 of the middle part, are arranged between the spacer element 46 and the spacer 40, so that the contact pads 43 are arranged facing the corresponding contact pads 33 of the PCB 39.
- Electric conduction tracks are further provided on the PCB 39 for electrically connecting the contact pads 33 with the first electrical module 32.
- the power source used is a battery 48 of large diameter. It can be seen that the battery 48 is arranged directly with its first face against the bottom 24 of the housing 20, while its second face bears against the spacer 40.
- the second face of the battery 48 is also supported on the face 45 of the buffer, so as to compress the latter and, to ensure the electrical contact between the contact pads 43 of the connection means 11 and the contact pads 33 of the PCB 39.
- the assembly of the portable device according to the present invention can be summarized as follows.
- the strand 1 is placed in the middle part 23, in which are already mounted a number of components such as the LCD screen 31 for example.
- the connection means 11 of the antenna 22 are introduced inside the housing 20.
- the spacer 40 is arranged in the middle part 23, if it was not yet done, then the buffer 44 in its housing 42.

- the fixing screws (not shown) of the housing 20 are put in place through the bottom 24 and the strand 1 into the middle 23, thus compressing the buffer 44 via the battery 48.
- the buffer 44 being then compressed against the PCB 39, the connection means 11 can no longer be disconnected from the contact pads 33 of the PCB.
- the intermediate spacer element 46 has, in its peripheral region situated opposite the opening 27, a rounding 49 to facilitate the sliding of the connection means 11.
- the PCB 39 and the contact pads 33 are located substantially in the same plane as the opening 27, so that the end 10 of the connection means 11 does not require to be bent when it is inserted opposite the contact pads 33. In this case, it is easy to dispense with the rounding 49 described above.
- the portable device according to the present invention advantageously makes it possible to establish an electrical connection between at least two electric modules without imposing the need to provide a specific step of establishing said connection, such as a screwing or welding step, when mounting the device.
- the portable device according to the present invention is also capable of transmitting radio waves via the antenna 22.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a portable device comprising a housing in which is disposed a first electrical module, and a bracelet attached to the housing, the housing comprising an upper part and a lower part which cooperate with each other to realize the assembly of the housing, a second electrical module being associated with the bracelet as well as electrical connection means providing an electrical connection between the first and second electrical modules through an opening in the housing, the first electrical module comprising at least one contact pad electrical capable of being connected to the electrical connection means.
More particularly, the present invention relates to such a portable device comprising means for establishing a contact of the electrical connection means with the first electrical module, inside the housing, removably.
In the present description, the term "electrical connection means" any conductor or set of conductors to provide an electrical connection between two electrical modules. Similarly, "electrical module" means any device for providing or receiving a power supply and, where appropriate, to transmit or receive an electrical signal.
In a preferred embodiment, the portable electronic device is made in the form of a portable electronic instrument in the form of a wristwatch having means for receiving, and possibly transmitting, radiofrequency type signals. In this case, the first electrical module comprises electronic circuits for processing electrical signals exchanged with the second electrical module, the latter comprising an antenna.
Such portable devices have already been described in the prior art proposing various solutions concerning the means for fixing the electrical connection means with the first electrical module.
This solution, however, has certain disadvantages, especially when mounting the electronic instrument insofar as it is necessary to provide holes in the printed circuit to receive the screws and to the extent that a screwing step is essential. In addition, a subsequent replacement of the antenna in case of a problem makes a complete disassembly of the instrument casing necessary before access to the fixing screws can be made, which can make this operation tedious.
A different solution to ensure the connection of the antenna terminals to the electronic processing circuits is disclosed in this same patent for the presentation of the prior art. This alternative is based on the use of a spring blade type connector, for each terminal of the antenna, on which is supported an electrical conductor connected to one of the terminals of the antenna.
Such an embodiment makes mounting the bracelet and the antenna easier than in the previously described solution insofar as it is sufficient to plug the electrical conductor into an opening of the housing to establish the electrical contact.
However, this solution also has drawbacks, in particular from the point of view of the durability.

The object of the present invention is to improve the electronic devices of this kind so as to avoid the aforementioned drawbacks.
For this purpose, the invention provides a portable device of the type indicated above, characterized in that the mounting of the housing ensures the establishment of an electrical contact, by compression, between said connection means and said contact pad.
In addition, there are provided fixing means for holding together the lower and upper parts of the housing, such as screws for example, the implementation of these fixing means to ensure the maintenance of the electrical contact between the connection means and the contact pad.
Thanks to the structure according to the present invention, the second electrical module housed in the bracelet of the portable device can be disconnected from the first electrical module by simply disengaging the two parts of the housing. Indeed, the fact of spreading the two parts of the housing from one another can relieve the pressure respectively exerted on the connecting means of the second electrical module and the contact pad of the first electrical module.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the portable electronic device is a wristwatch type instrument having communication means using radio frequency waves. It is therefore expected to house an antenna in the bracelet, connected to electronic processing circuit signals received by the antenna, these circuits being arranged in the instrument housing.
In this case, electrical conductors are also provided to connect the two terminals of the antenna to the electronic processing circuits, the conductors being arranged through an opening in the instrument housing. During the installation of the antenna, regions of the electrical conductors are brought opposite contact pads arranged on a printed circuit carrying the electronic processing circuits.
On prévoit alors des moyens pour comprimer ces régions des conducteurs électriques contre les plots de contact lors du montage des parties inférieure et supérieure du boîtierMeans are then provided for compressing these regions of the electrical conductors against the contact pads during assembly of the lower and upper housing parts.
These means can be simply made in the form of feet manufactured in one piece, respectively with the lower and upper parts of the housing and located opposite the contact pads of the printed circuit.
According to a preferred embodiment, additional means are provided for compressing the connection means against the contact pads.
Thanks to the features of the invention, complete disassembly of the housing is not necessary to perform the disassembly of the bracelet and the antenna. In addition, the connection of the antenna to the electronic processing circuits is reliable and has a good behavior over time.

The embodiments described relate to a particular portable electronic device by way of non-limiting example, namely a wristwatch type instrument having at least radio frequency wave reception functionalities.

It is further noted that a
The
It can also be seen that the reinforcing
Of course, it is possible to provide a single electronic circuit uniting all the
Thus, the simple assembly of the upper parts, that is to say the middle 23, and lower, that is to say the bottom 24, leads to the establishment of an electrical connection between a first and a second modules electrical means, that is to say here 32 electronic signal processing circuits and an
An additional advantage of the structure according to the present invention stems from the fact that the first

In this view, it can be seen that the

In the present embodiment, all the electronic circuits of the portable device are arranged on a printed

Between these two figures, it can be seen that a

In this embodiment, there is, under the
An
In the portable device shown to illustrate this second preferred embodiment, the power source used is a
Therefore, because the thickness of the
Le tampon 44 étant alors comprimé contre le PCB 39, les moyens de connexion 11 ne peuvent plus être déconnectés des plots de contact 33 du PCB.Thus, the assembly of the portable device according to the present invention can be summarized as follows. The
Of course it can be provided, alternatively, that the
Thus, it is understood that, thanks to its structure, the portable device according to the present invention advantageously makes it possible to establish an electrical connection between at least two electric modules without imposing the need to provide a specific step of establishing said connection, such as a screwing or welding step, when mounting the device.
Of course, it will be understood that the first and second embodiments which have just been described correspond to respectively general and particular structures, exposed for purposes of non-limiting illustration.
For example, it is possible to provide electronic circuits for producing electrical signals sent to the second electrical module, so that the portable device according to the present invention is also capable of transmitting radio waves via the
It will be understood that various modifications and / or improvements obvious to those skilled in the art can be made to the embodiments described in the present description without departing from the scope of the invention defined by the appended claims.
