Abstract

The bracelet receiver antenna has a unit with an electronic signal receiver and an antenna (1) placed on the bracelet outer. The antenna has a flat coil (2) forming a spiral winding.

Description

The present invention relates to a portable electronic device comprising a bracelet, a case and an electronic circuit for receiving radio broadcast signals comprising an antenna disposed in said bracelet.

More specifically, the present invention relates to an antenna structure which allows the portable device to receive signals whose frequency is located in the domain of very high frequencies, i.e. VHF ("Very High Frequency") waves, with good sensitivity. preferably said antenna is capable of receiving signals belonging to the range frequency of the FM band ("Frequency Modulation"), in other words whose frequency is substantially between 87 and 110 MHz.

Such devices have already been described in the prior art and in particular, very varied antenna structures have been proposed.

One can, for example, refer to US Patent 4,754,285, issued June 28 1988, which describes a wristwatch incorporating in particular a circuit for receiving radio signals requiring the use of an antenna. The solution described consists of placing a metal cable in a stretch bracelet over its entire length and in such a way that said cable makes successive round trips in the sense of the width of said bracelet. Thus, the length of the cable is greater than the length of the bracelet at rest, which then allows the bracelet to be stretched.

However, this solution, in addition to having a large size in the strap, not suitable for watches with two straps strands closing one on the other by a fastening device.

Other solutions have been presented to meet this scenario, such as a simple loop of metal wire running through each of the two strands of the bracelet from the end connected to the watch case to the end carrying the means of attachment to the other strand. Means are also provided for establishing a connection electric between the two parts of the loop at the attachment means.

These connection means however complicate the construction of the bracelet, especially since they are preferably protected from the external environment, particular from the sweat of the watch wearer, which requires taking important protective measures.

The Applicant has highlighted, during its research, that it is possible with the present invention to improve electronic devices portable above-mentioned, in particular thanks to a simple construction of the antenna, despite its simplicity allowing good signal reception sensitivity radio broadcast in VHF. The solution according to the present invention further allows the use of such a type of antenna without requiring major modifications in the constructions of the prior art to integrate it.

To this end, the invention relates to a portable electronic device of the type indicated above, characterized in that said antenna comprises at least one flat coil produced in the form of a spiral winding.

Thus, the size of the antenna in the bracelet is greatly limited while ensuring the electronic device according to the present invention a quality of optimal reception.

It can be provided, in a second embodiment, that said antenna comprises a second flat coil produced in the form of a winding spiral. This further improves the sensitivity of the electronic device according to the present invention, insofar as the two coils are connected in series, in causing only a very small increase in the size of the antenna in the bracelet. One can imagine, to implement the present embodiment in a device comprising a bracelet made of two independent parts, placing a first of said two coils in a first strand, while the second coil is placed in the second bracelet strand.

We can also imagine that each coil is produced by the deposit of a copper strip, for example, on a substrate and that, in this case, a first coil is arranged on a first face of said substrate while the second coil is arranged on the second face of the substrate. This variant embodiment facilitates the means of connection with the integrated circuit of the circuit reception of radio signals, in particular when the latter is housed in the electronic device housing.

It is of course preferable that the substrate used to support the antenna according to the present invention is made of a flexible material, so as to allow deformations of the bracelet.

Generally, the integrated circuit of the receiving circuit being disposed in the case of the electronic device, it is planned to use tracks to connect it to the ends of the coil (s). These tracks metal are preferably supported by an extension of the substrate which extends to the interior of said housing.

In addition, due to the specific spiral shape of the coil, an opening is provided in the substrate to allow the establishment of the connection of the inner end of said coil with said corresponding metal track.

In a preferred embodiment, the solution described above is implemented work in a timepiece, the case comprising in this case in particular a clock movement coupled with time display means.

  • la figure 1 est une vue de dessus d'un mode de réalisation de l'antenne selon la présente invention;
Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will appear on reading the detailed description which follows, given with reference to the appended drawings, given by way of examples and in which:
  • Figure 1 is a top view of an embodiment of the antenna according to the present invention;
  • FIG. 2 is a simplified and transparent schematic view of the electronic device incorporating the antenna shown in FIG. 1, according to a preferred embodiment of the invention, and
  • Figure 3 is a top view similar to that of Figure 1, for a second embodiment of the antenna according to the present invention.

On constate en outre que la bobine 2, préférablement réalisée en cuivre et présentant une faible épaisseur de l'ordre de quelques micromètres, est disposée sur la face avant 3 d'un substrat 4.Figure 1 is a general elevational view of an antenna 1 having a single coil 2, according to a main embodiment of the present invention, on which is apparent the specific shape of said coil wound in a spiral. We further notes that the coil 2, preferably made of copper and having a small thickness of the order of a few micrometers, is arranged on the face front 3 of a substrate 4.

In order to optimize the surface available in a bracelet, the substrate 4 has a substantially rectangular shape. Similarly, the winding in spiral of the coil 2 has a substantially rectangular general shape, of so as to optimize the surface of available substrate.

A particularly advantageous system is thus obtained in that the surface coil 2 can be much larger than if it were housed in the housing of the portable device.

A second elongated rectangular connector 8 is disposed on said extension 7 of the substrate, parallel to the first connector 6, and is intended to connect the second end 9 of the coil 2 to said integrated circuit. Said second end 9 being located inside the spiral, an opening 10 is made through the substrate 4 and filled with a material having a high electrical conduction. Thus, an electrical contact with the second end 9 of the coil 2 is made available on the rear face 11 of the substrate 4. Similarly, an opening 12 is formed through the substrate 4 and filled with an electrically conductive material, under the end 13 of the second connector 8 located on the side of the coil 2, so that make electrical contact with said second connector 8 on the rear face 11 of the substrate. A metallization track 14 is also provided to finalize the connection electric between the second end 9 of the coil 2 and the second connector rectangular 8. This structure has been described by way of nonlimiting example and man art may use any other equivalent structure ensuring the function of electrical connection.

The antenna 1 shown in Figure 1 being intended to be housed in a portable device bracelet, said substrate 4 is favorably produced in a flexible material, in particular when a deformable bracelet is provided to wear the electronic device according to the invention. In this case, materials such as than Kapton (registered trademark) or any other material with properties equivalent of adhesion with copper and flexibility. In addition, said substrate 4 has a thickness of the order of a few tens of micrometers.

The manufacture of said antenna 1 uses techniques known in the art prior, especially in the field of printed circuit manufacturing. Indeed, those skilled in the art will be able to adapt one of the methods without particular difficulty conventional in the said field.

For example, we can start with a Kapton sheet, cut to adequate dimensions and comprising the two openings10, 12 described above, that we filled with an electrically conductive material. This sheet, thus prepared defines the substrate 4 of the antenna 1. We then glue a copper foil on each faces 3, 11 of said substrate. We partially protect the two copper sheets from so as to leave free the portions which neither correspond to the design of the coil 2, neither that of connectors 6 and 8, nor that of metallization track 14 located on the rear face 11 of the substrate. One then proceeds to a chemical attack of said free parts, so as to obtain a coil 2 and connectors 6, 8 such that shown in Figure 1, for example.

It can be noted that depending on the frequency at which the antenna 1 shown in Figure 1 must work, the skilled person must pay attention particular to the adaptation of the dimensions of the spiral. Indeed, a phenomenon well known in the field of antennas comprising coils is the risk of capacitive coupling which may appear between neighboring turns. The man of art must therefore take care to correctly define the distances between two consecutive turns of the spiral, depending in particular on the thickness of copper used for the realization of the coil and the working frequency, the capacitive coupling increasing with said frequency.

Figure 2 shows a transparent view of the electronic device portable 15 according to the invention, incorporating the antenna 1 which has just been described in a bracelet strand 16. It can be seen in this figure that the dimensions of the antenna 1 according to the invention advantageously allow the portable device 15 to be equipped a bracelet with usual dimensions.

The antenna 1 is here represented in a curved configuration, illustrating the flexibility properties of the substrate 4. It should be noted the great importance of the choice made to place the antenna 1 close to the upper surface 17 of the strand 16. Indeed, the human body is generally responsible for a decrease in the sensitivity of an antenna which is placed in its proximity, by a shielding effect, this is why the distance d must have the highest possible value. So, the antenna of the electronic device according to the invention has a high sensitivity for receiving radio broadcast signals.

From a practical point of view, the integration of antenna 1 in the bracelet of the electronic device 15 can be performed in various ways. We can, by example, plan to directly overmold the antenna 1 in the bracelet strand 16 when it is made of plastic, leaving free the extension 7 of the substrate 4. It is also possible to use a strand 16 of bracelet having a housing in its mass, of dimensions substantially greater than dimensions of the antenna 1, so that the latter can be slid there. We can still just use a strand 16 of bracelet in two layers, both layers being for example sewn one on the other while the antenna 1 is arranged between them.

Of course, it is obvious that the portable electronic device is not limited by the structure of the bracelet, which can either have one or two strands and which can be expandable or not.

It is also apparent from this figure that the extension 7 of the substrate 4 carrying the rectangular connectors 6 and 8 extend to the inside of the housing 18 of the portable electronic device 15, in contact with a printed circuit 19. The latter has two openings 20 (only one being visible in FIG. 2) passing through it completely and filled with an electrically conductive material. The connectors rectangular 6 and 8 are respectively connected to said printed circuit 19, respectively at each of said openings 20 so as to define a electrical contact with each of the ends 5 and 9 of the coil 2 on the face upper 21 of the printed circuit 19. The connection between the connectors 6, 8 and the circuit printed 19 is carried out in a conventional manner, that is to say by welding, screwing, bonding using an electrically conductive glue, or by any other means equivalent.

An integrated circuit 22 is also carried by the printed circuit 19 and is connected to said two electrical contacts 20 by metallization tracks 23 (one only being visible in Figure 2). This integrated circuit 22 processes the radio signals received by antenna 1 so that they can then be returned accessible to a user of the portable electronic device 15 according to the invention, in a directly usable form. This aspect of the operation of the device portable electronics 15 will not be discussed in more detail here as it does has only a secondary character in the present invention.

Construction details concerning the passage of extension 7 of the substrate 4 carrying the two rectangular connectors 6 and 8 will also not be developed since many solutions have already been presented in prior art documents. The interested reader can for example consult the European patent application No. 1,033,636, published on September 6, 2000, the content is incorporated by reference into this application.

Indeed, the description of this patent application sets out several modes for making the passage of electrical connectors through a watch case tightly. Overall, the solution described in this patent application consists in providing an opening on the side of the watch case, in which has a channel 24 of substantially tubular shape. Sealing means 25 are provided between the watch case 18 and the outside of the tubular channel 24. The electrical connectors are guided inside the watch case by the channel and means are further provided for sealing the interior of the channel 24 relative to the outside of the watch case. These sealing means are by example produced in the form of a joint 26 overmolded around the connectors electric and having the same shape as the inside of the channel, thus ensuring a plug function.

Means such as connectors can optionally be provided themselves do not penetrate inside the device housing electronic. One can for example use a set of conjugate contacts as described in European patent N ° 0 186 804, or even a capacitive coupling taking place at through the device housing, as described in the European patent application No. 1 014 231. This latter embodiment advantageously makes it possible to facilitate the construction of the housing 18 of the device from the point of view of sealing, in so far where it is not necessary that openings are made in said housing.

The substrate 28 is of the same type as that 4 described previously in relation to the Figure 1, with the difference that its thickness must be significantly greater than that of said substrate 4 of FIG. 1. In fact, the coils 2, 27 being made opposite respectively on each of the faces 29, 30 of the substrate 28, they can by therefore present a parasitic capacitive coupling detrimental to the quality of reception of antenna 1. As mentioned above, the amplitude of this coupling capacitive depends on the width of the respective turns of the two coils 2, 27 as well as of the working frequency. Those skilled in the art will have no difficulty particular to adjust the thickness of the substrate 28 in order to find a compromise between the size of the antenna 1 and the influence of the capacitive coupling on its sensitivity in reception.

We distinguish in Figure 3 the elements already described in relation to the figured 1, namely, the coil 2 having a first end 5 external to the spiral and a second end 9 inside the spiral, the rectangular connectors 6, 8 as well as the two openings 10, 12 in the substrate 28 making it possible to establish electrical connections and the metallization track 14 on the rear face 30 of the substrate 28.

There is also a second coil 27 in the general shape of a spiral, printed on the rear face 30 of the substrate 28, the first end of which 28 external to the spiral is connected to said rear metallization track 14. The second end 32 of the coil 27, located inside the spiral is connected to the opening 10 connecting the second end 9 of the first coil 2 to the rear face 30 of the substrate 28, so that the two coils 2 and 27 are connected in series.

In addition, it should be noted that to improve the sensitivity of the antenna 1 thus obtained, the two coils 2, 27 are wound in opposite directions, one with respect to to the other. In fact, in the nonlimiting example shown in FIG. 3, the coil 2 located on the upper face 29 of the substrate 28 is wound in the direction negative trigonometric, when traversed from its first outer end 5 towards its inner end 9, while the second coil 27 located on the face back 30 of substrate 28 is wound in a positive trigonometric direction, when travels from its first outer end 31 to its inner end 32. In this way, the respective induced currents resulting from the application of the same magnetic field on the respective coils 2, 27 have the same direction of circulation and are therefore accumulated before being received by the integrated circuit 22 for processing radio signals.

It can also be noted that with the configuration shown in FIG. 3, in which the coils 2 and 27 are not superimposed, the risks of coupling capacitive are reduced compared to a configuration in which the turns would be superimposed.

Le procédé de fabrication de l'antenne 1 représentée sur la figure 3 est analogue à celui utilisé pour la fabrication de l'antenne représentée sur la figure 1.The method of manufacturing the antenna 1 shown in FIG. 3 is similar to that used for the manufacture of the antenna shown in FIG. 1.

De même, la disposition de cette antenne répond aux mêmes exigences que celle décrites précédemment en relation avec la figure 2.Similarly, the layout of this antenna meets the same requirements as that described above in relation to FIG. 2.

The foregoing description corresponds to preferred embodiments of the invention and can in no way be considered as limiting, with regard to relates more particularly to the number or relative arrangements of the coils when the antenna has several. We can indeed plan to use by example an antenna with two coils supported by two distinct substrates, said substrates being respectively housed on the respective two sides of the device housing portable electronics according to the invention. In other words, in the case of a bracelet with two strands, each of the two coils can be housed in a different strand. In that case, it is of course necessary to provide additional contacts on the printed circuit as well as additional metallization tracks.

It is also possible to integrate a watch movement (identified by the reference 33 in FIG. 2) coupled to means for displaying the time in the portable electronic device according to the present invention.
