Wird dabei das Auftragsmedium mittels eines Auftragswerks auf die Materialbahn aufgebracht, dem eine Rakelklinge zum Egalisieren oder/und Dosieren der aufgebrachten Schicht vom Auftragsmedium nachgeordnet ist (Klingenauftragswerk), so hat dies häufig den Nachteil einer schlechten Abdeckung der Materialbahn. Zudem wird die Materialbahn durch die Rakelklinge in hohem Maße beansprucht, was sich beispielsweise im Herausreißen von Fasern aus der Materialbahn bemerkbar macht. Es ist unnötig zu erwähnen, dass dieses Herrausreißen von Fasern die Oberflächeneigenschaften der gestrichenen Materialbahn verschlechtert. Im Extremfall kann es sogar zum Reißen der Materialbahn kommen. Ein weiterer Nachteil des Einsatzes eines Klingenauftragswerks ist die Gefahr von "Mottling" beim Trocknen der gestrichenen Materialbahn.
