Die beiden Baken sind links und rechts der Autostraße AS angeordnet und leuchten in Fahrtrichtung zwei sich schneidende Kommunikationsbereiche KB aus, innerhalb derer der Datenaustausch erfolgt. Derartige Kontrollstationen mit Infrarotbaken können konstruktiv verhältnismäßig einfach gestaltet sein. In vorteilhafter-Weise leuchten sie die Straßen in einer großen Reichweite aus. Das hat den Vorteil, daß für die kryptografische Sicherung der Zahlvorgänge, die eine relativ lange Rechenzeit beansprucht, eine ausreichende Kontaktzeit vorhanden ist. Eine fest installierte Kontrollstation wird man im allgemeinen erst einrichten, wenn der Ausstattungsgrad der Fahrzeuge mit Bordgeräten hoch genug ist und keine allzu hohe Zahl von Nichtzahlern erfaßt und vom Videobild her ausgewertet werden müssen. Solche Stationen können an verengten Fahrbahnbereichen oder Autobahnausfahrten mit nur einer Fahrspur angeordnet sein, dann ist kein Fahrzeugdetektor in Form eines Radargerätes erforderlich.
