Definitions

  • the invention relates to a spark plug with a central electrode insulated from the candle thread and with ground electrodes electrically connected to the candle thread, an attachment part consisting at least partially of platinum or a platinum alloy being attached to the combustion chamber end of the central electrode, between which and from the side the spark gaps that are brought up to him are the spark gaps, the attachment part essentially having the shape of a prism with the cover surface facing the combustion chamber and the mass electrodes running laterally next to the side surfaces of the essentially prism-shaped attachment part essentially parallel to the prism edges of the cover surface or the base surface, whereby Two mass electrodes are combined to form a component, the two electrode arms of which run at least approximately parallel to two side surfaces of the attachment part of the center electrode.
  • spark plugs which have a very high level of stability, in particular a low erosion of the electrodes, and yet can be operated with relatively low ignition voltages. If necessary, there should be a convenient adjustment facility with a defined electrode spacing.
  • the attachment part on the central electrode preferably made of platinum or a platinum alloy
  • the attachment part on the central electrode preferably made of platinum or a platinum alloy
  • the erosion is limited due to the relatively large effective total length of the prism edges.
  • the spark gaps are located between the attachment part and the mass electrodes running laterally next to the attachment part, essentially parallel to the prism edges of the top surface or the base surface, and thus practically surround the entire prism-shaped attachment part. Due to the parallel guidance of the mass electrodes to the side faces of the prism-shaped attachment part made of platinum, the electrode erosion, which is only present to a small extent anyway, is also relatively uniform.
  • the ground electrodes are L-shaped and can be provided with platinum.
  • the invention provides that from the apex of the electrode arms of the component which is V-shaped or Y-shaped in plan view, a common web leads to the body of the spark plug.
  • this design Due to this design, an improved stability of the ground electrodes is achieved compared to L-shaped ground electrodes. Furthermore, this design also has a favorable effect on the adjustability of the electrode spacing between the ground electrodes and the center electrode, two electrode arms being adjustable jointly and simultaneously.
  • the V- or Y-shaped component of the mass electrodes can be made of any metal, but preferably made of semi-precious metal such as e.g. Nickel, or from precious metal such as e.g. Platinum. Corresponding metal alloys or metal combinations are of course also possible, for example in such a way that the V- or Y-shaped component consists of a semi-precious metal as a support for a thin electrode layer made of noble metal, in particular of platinum or a platinum alloy.
  • the mass electrodes consist of at least one carrier made of base metal or semi-precious metal, preferably nickel, which is provided with platinum or a platinum alloy facing the top part of the center electrode, the platinum or the platinum alloy is arranged as a thin electrode layer on the carrier and this electrode layer is formed by thin rods of platinum or a platinum alloy that are welded or soldered onto the carrier and parallel to the ground electrodes.
  • Another preferred embodiment has a thin platinum electrode layer for the same purpose, this electrode layer being made from thin, welded or soldered onto the carrier and to the ground electrodes parallel rods made of platinum or a platinum alloy.
  • FIG. 1 shows a side view of a spark plug according to the invention.
  • Fig. 2 shows an enlarged plan view of the head of the spark plug facing the combustion chamber.
  • Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 2 in the direction of arrow III in Fig. 2.
  • Fig. 4 shows the central electrode in section.
  • the spark plug shown in FIG. 1 has an insulating body 1 for isolating the central center electrode 2 from the metal housing 3, which is in operation during operation and which is formed in one piece with a hexagon nut 4 and a threaded part 5.
  • the center electrode 2 has a prism-shaped attachment part 7 which is square in plan view and which consists of a platinum-rhodium alloy.
  • the prism-shaped attachment part is carried by a pin-shaped part of the center electrode which projects into a central opening of the attachment part 7 and is welded or soldered to it.
  • This pin-shaped part consists e.g. of a core 2A made of copper and a sheath 2B made of nickel (FIG. 4).
  • the ground electrodes 8, 9 of the spark plug each consist of a carrier 8A, 8B, 9A, 9B made of base metal or semi-precious metal, for example nickel, connected to the ground ring 5A of the threaded part 5 on its arms 8B, 9B, facing the prism-shaped attachment part 7 of the center electrode 2, a thin layer 8C, 9C made of platinum or a platinum alloy, for example a platinum-rhodium alloy, is arranged, for example welded or soldered on.
  • the carrier 8A, 8B or 9A, 9B has a Y-shape, the thin electrode layer 8C, 9C being arranged on the mutually facing inner sides of the two Y-electrode arms 8B, 9B and Two electrode arms 8B-8B and 9B-9B are connected to the ground ring 5A via a common web 8A and 9A.
