Definitions

  • This patent application concerns a tubular tank, to be attached longitudinally to the keel of a boat, said tank terminating astern in an opening located partially or completely below the waterline, so that when the craft is moored said tank completely fills up with water which enters automatically.
  • the body of water that enters the aforesaid tank effectively acts as a ballast and has the effect of rendering the moored boat more stable so that movement on the part of people on board can hardly be felt.
  • the latter may have on its front end, or be connected to by means of a duct, one or more sizeable forward openings, positioned well above the waterline, so as on the one hand to avoid shipping water and on the other, to make use of the pressure exerted by the air current that helps the tank to empty completely during sailing.
  • the presence of the longitudinal tank, with an opening astern, can also be useful for discharging any water taken aboard: to this end it is sufficient to mount a normal discharge valve that connects the sump of the craft to the tank below, into which any water shipped will automatically flow and accumulate and from which it will then automatically flow out, through the stern-end opening, during sailing.
  • the instant invention revolutionises current nautical equipment in that it allows the stability of the craft to be increased without increasing its weight.
  • the use of the tank according to the invention provides a valid solution for the two abovementioned requirements.
  • the invention is also useful for small craft which are loaded onto the roofs of cars and which must therefore be extremely light, but only when out of the water, of course, and not when on the sea.
  • the idea according to the invention provides easily transportable boats which are easy to manoeuvre when planing but extremely stable when moored or during low speed manoeuvres.
  • each tank can be adpoted, these being positioned symmetrically on the two sides of the craft, below the waterline as usual.
  • a sluice gate astern, which can determine, as required, the emptying or filling of the tank through the opening positioned astern, thus providing a counterweight equal to the weight of the stagnant water in the tank to balance the strong swinging movements of the sails caused by the wind, therefore enabling the push provided by the wind to be used to greater advantage.
  • the invention consists of a tubular tank (1), of any transverse dimension, open at its rear end (1a), emerging in the centre of the transom (2) at such a height that it is completely or only partially below the waterline, so that the tank (1), which automatically fills with water when the boat is moored, can be emptied in a few moments once sailing has started.
  • this tank (1) can also have a second opening (lb), positioned at the bow, well above the waterline, as shown in fig.4.
  • Installation of said tubular tank (1) can be carried out using normal methods , such as welding, thus fixing it to the bottom of the craft, inside the keel, as indicated in the schematic drawing Fig.2.
  • the tank (1) could, on the other hand, be encased and held firm within a suitable longitudinal housing (3), positioned, in this case, in the centre of the bottom of the craft, as shown in the schematic drawing in fig.3; in the latter form of construction it is obvious that the lower external wall of the tank (1) must be "V"-shaped since it actually forms the keel of the craft.
