Definitions
- the present invention relates to the automatic placing in envelopes of document bundles, in particular in automatic mail processing machines.
- the bundles to be successively wrapped may be formed from one or more sheets.
- this enveloping is carried out at the outlet of a folder or a device for assembling or transporting bundles.
- Envelope introduction devices may include pusher lugs, or introduction rollers, which push the bundle into an envelope extracted from a stack of envelopes and presented open on the path of the bundle.
- the arm is urged so that its fingers tend to be in the erased position, but carries, on its lower edge a lug which, by pressing on a guide surface provided in one of the rods, causes the raising of the fingers on the ends and beginnings of the outward and return journeys of the assembly.
- the guide surface defines a high level of support of the lug on the ends and beginnings of the outward and return strokes and a low level of intermediate support, transition ramps connect the high and low levels.
- the fingers are initially raised.
- the arrival of the lug on the first transition ramp corresponds to the arrival of the fingers raised against the bundle.
- This transition ramp allows the descent of the fingers then pinching against the surface of the table the bundle thus transported and introduced into the envelope.
- the second transition ramp causes the rising of the fingers and the loosening of the bundle then pushed fully into the envelope.
- the pinching fingers are erased along the length of the lug travel on the low level of its guide surface.
- Such a device provides protection for the bundle during its introduction into the envelope by the engagement of the table with the bundle in the envelope.
- the action of the pinching fingers urged to bear on the bundle and retained by the bundle during its transport can come to damage it prior to its insertion and is therefore harmful.
- the object of the present invention is, in particular to avoid such a drawback. It also aims to put suitable bundles of variable dimensions in corresponding envelopes, ensuring the protection of such bundles throughout their introduction.
- the device for inserting a bundle into an envelope has a bundle entry station 1 and a envelope holding station 2 presented open, facing the entry station of bundle.
- a bundle guide path 3 is defined by endless belts or bands 30 and 31 mounted between sets of rollers 32 and '33, for the upper belt 30, and 34, 35 , 36 for the lower belt 31.
- This guide path connects, for example, the outlet of an automatic folding machine, not shown, to the entry station 1.
- the bundle entry station 1 is defined by a fixed plate 10, extending under the bundle guide path 3 and projecting over the two end rollers 33 and 36 of the guide path, towards the station 2 of envelope maintenance.
- the plate 10 is distant from the envelope holding station 2.
- the edge of the plate 10 is inclined on the horizontal and is crossed by the end of a stop 12, called a bundle forming stop.
- This stop is actuated in tilting around an axis 13 by an electromagnet 14 whose movable arm is linked to the other end of the stop. This tilting of the stopper makes it possible to free the bundle from the entry station, for putting it in an envelope.
- the envelope holding station 2 ensures the immobile maintenance of the envelope 20 presented open facing the station 1.
- This envelope holding station 2 normally constitutes the output of an envelope extraction device from a store. or of a mechanism for transporting envelopes extracted one after the other from a store, not shown because it does not belong to the present invention.
- the station 2 is, therefore, illustrated schematically formed by two retaining slides 22 and 23 defining between them a bundle insertion window 24; the flap 21 of the envelope passes over one of the slides, the other slide allows the rear face of the envelope to be kept at a distance from its front face, for opening the envelope over the width of the window 24.
- the device essentially comprises two retractable push fingers 4, identical l to one another, which are individually mounted on the end portions facing two parallel support arms 5 secured to a carriage 6, and a serving table 7 also secured to the carriage 6.
- the carriage 6 has the shape of a U above which extends on one side the serving table 7 and has on the end of one of its branches a horizontal flange extending on the side opposite to the table .
- the carriage 6 is equipped with guide sleeves 60, 61 on slides 62. It is driven on its slides 62, to effect an alternating movement back and forth, by a drive mechanism of the connecting rod-crank type linked to the socket 60.
- This drive mechanism is as such well known, it has not been shown in the drawings and in particular in FIG. 1, for the purpose of representing on a suitable scale the essential elements of the device. He has simply been symbolized by an arrow 63. It drives the carriage 6 between two defined limit positions, one called the rest position in which is represented. the device and the other said working position in which the carriage 6, the table 7 and the push fingers 4 have been sketched in dotted lines in FIG. 1. In this working position the fingers are just in front of the window 24 and the table 7 in envelope 20.
- the support arms 5 and the push fingers 4 extend above the table 7. They are spaced from each other by a distance slightly greater than the width of the plate 10.
- the ends of the push fingers 4 are arranged substantially at the middle part of the serving table 7; they leave free the front part 70 of the table 7 for the reception of the bundle evacuated from the entry station 1.
- the support arms 5 are linked by a spacer 50. The connection between the support arm 5 and the carriage 6 is produced on the spacer 50.
- the serving table 7 extends below the entry station 1. It is, in level, offset from the plate 10 by a distance slightly greater than the height of the support arms 5 considered relative to the table 7, but less at the height of the non-retracted push fingers taken in relation to the table.
- the push fingers which are on either side of the plate 10 are in relief on the level of the plate when they are not retracted, while they are set back below the level of the plate and can pass under the stop 12 no cleared when retracted.
- a tablet 64 fixed on the carriage 6 extends substantially at the level of the serving table 7, which it partially covers.
- This shelf 64 has a width slightly greater than the overall distance of the support arms 5. It has two folded longitudinal edges 64a which extend externally along the support arms 5 and carries two brackets 64b which extend internally along these support arms ( Figure 4).
- the serving table 7 is mounted on an auxiliary carriage 8 which is housed in the carriage 6 and is linked to it for driving the table 7.
- the connection between the serving table 7 and the carriage 6 is ensured by a pair of rods 65 mounted between the carriage 6 and the auxiliary carriage 8.
- These push fingers 4 are articulated on the end portions of the support arms. They have an inverted U profile on the end portions of the support arms. They each carry a stud 40 mounted between the branches of the U. This stud is engaged in an oblong window 51 which has the end portions of the support arms, it defines the axis of articulation of the finger.
- Spring rods 41 are mounted, externally along the support arms 5, between the end of the retaining stud of each push finger and the carriage 6 ( Figure 2). These spring rods 41 are rigid and arcuate, they work in flexion and provide an elastic connection for returning the push fingers 4 to the retracted position.
- the windows 51 through which the studs 40 pass allow a longitudinal play of the support arms 5 in the push fingers 4 whose hinge pins are held by the spring rods 41 relative to the carriage 6.
- each support arm 5 internally at the push finger, is profiled to define an inclined end ramp 52 and an intermediate horizontal bearing 53.
- each push finger carries an internal roller 42 mounted transversely between the branches of the profile in U. This roller rests on the bearing 53 or the ramp 52, depending on the position taken by the support arms 5 in the push fingers. Pressing on the bearing 53, it maintains the end of the push finger in the raised position on the support arm. It is guided along the ramp 52 during the movement of the window 51 on the stud 40, for the tilting of the push finger. Pressing on the end of the support arm, at the low level of the ramp 52, the push finger is retracted, it simply covers the end portion of the support arm.
- connection between the carriage 6 and the support arms 5 is provided in an elastic manner by a pair of springs 55.
- These springs 55 are mounted on retaining rods 57, between a support 54 fixed on the spacer 50 connecting the arms -support 5 and a stop bracket 56 fixed to the shelf 64 mounted on the carriage 6.
- This elastic connection between the carriage 6 and the support arms 5 is associated an additional mechanism 9 linked to the carriage 6.
- This mechanism comprises a hub 90 mounted by rings 91, 92 between the horizontal flange and the bottom of the carriage 6. This hub extends slightly beyond the height of the carriage.
- the pawls 93 and 94 are arranged substantially orthogonally to each other on the hub.
- the pawl 93 is held substantially transverse to the support arm 5 by a return spring 95 fixed to the carriage 6. It has a lateral notch 96.
- This pawl 93 cooperates with a pin 58 carried by the support 54 fixed on the spacer 50 binder the support arms 5, this pin passing through the horizontal edge of the carriage 6 and the shelf 64 separating the spacer and the pawl.
- the pin 58 when it is engaged in the notch 96 of the pawl, constitutes a non-elastic connection between the carriage and the support arms 5, substituting for the outward travel of the carriage with the elastic connection produced by the springs 55.
- the pawl 94 has a lateral notch 98 ( Figures 2 and 4) at its end. It cooperates with a fixed stop 18 (FIGS. 2 and 3), arranged on the path of the pawl 94, shown diagrammatically by the broken lines 99 in FIG. 3.
- This stop 18 is pivotally mounted around an axis 18a in the device and is biased by a spring 19, to allow free engagement of the end of the pawl on its front end and then its erasure by tilting according to arrow 19a towards the end of the forward stroke of the carriage 6.
- the pawl 94 In the working position of the carriage, it that is to say at the end of its outward travel, the pawl 94 is beyond the stop 18 which, released, has swung back under the action of the spring 19.
- this stopper 18 On the other hand forms a non-erasable obstacle.
- the lateral catch 98 of the pawl 94 then engages on the rear edge of the stopper 18.
- the retention of this pawl 94 on the stopper 18 makes the pawl 94 pivot around the axis of the hub 90.
- This pivoting of the pawl 94 transmitted to the pawl 93, unlocks the pin 58 from its notch 96 for the removal of the non-elastic connection between the carriage and the support arms, which the pin 58 produced in the notch 96 of the pawl 94, and the only maintenance of the elastic connection produced by the springs 55.
- This return stroke time with retracted push fingers is advantageously used for the supply of bundles to be placed in the envelope of the input station 1 closed by the stop 12, this bundle arriving on the plate 10 formed of one or more sheets or forming on the plate 10 by accumulation of individual sheets arriving one after the other.
- the placing of the push fingers 4 in the non-retracted position is carried out at the end of the return stroke of the carriage 6.
- This return stroke of the carriage 6 is chosen slightly longer than that possible of the support arms 5, limited by the buffer stops 15.
- a the arrival of the carriage in its rest position the thrust exerted by the stops 15 on the ends of the support arms is transmitted to the spacer 50 and to the pin 58.
- This pin 58 guided on the edge of the pawl is locked in its notch 96 to establish a non-elastic connection between the carriage 6 and the support arms 5, for its outward travel.
- This thrust compresses the springs 55, causes the displacement along the arrow fa of the support arms 5 relative to the carriage 6 for their positioning given in solid lines in FIG. 3.
- the window 51 has slipped on the stud 40 and, simultaneously, the rollers 42 have gone up the ramps 52 to position themselves on the bearings and maintain the ends of the push fingers 4 in relief on their support arms.
- the stop 12 is retracted by the command it receives from the electromagnet.
- the push fingers laterally sweep the level of the tray 10 for the passage of the bundle of the tray 10 to the serving table 7 which receives it and form a stop for this bundle on the serving table, during their introduction into the envelope 20.
- the new bundle can arrive constituted or can be constituted on the plate 10 closed by the stop 12.
- the outward travel time is therefore added to the time return stroke for supplying entry station 1 with a new bundle.
- the serving table 7 and bundle assembly is introduced into the envelope. Under these conditions, the bundle remains protected by the serving table, even in the event of jamming.
- the table 7 on its carriage 8 is made of adjustable length and width with respect to references taken with respect to the carriage 6 driven between its two limit working positions and defined rest.
- This table 7 is formed by a set of three plates of the same length, one central 72 and two lateral 73 and 74 on which slightly overhang the central plate 72 ( Figure 2).
- This assembly formed by the three plates defines, at the front the push fingers 4, the front part 70 of the serving table 7.
- the other part is linked to the auxiliary carriage 8.
- FIG. 2 shows that the central plate 72 is directly fixed to the auxiliary carriage 8 and the side plates 73, 74 each via a support 75.
- the supports 75 are aligned on the auxiliary carriage 8. They both have a thread and receive a threaded rod 80 for adjusting the width of the table 7.
- This rod 80 is threaded on the left and on the right respectively in one and l 'Another of the threads which correspond to them in the supports 75, in order to obtain a simultaneous movement of the side plates in opposite directions opposite the central plate and, ultimately, for the adjustment of the width 1 servant 7.
- the threaded rod 80 has a bevel gear head 81 coupled to a pinion 82 also with a bevel gear carried by a control transmission rod 83.
- This rod 83 is mounted through bearings on the auxiliary carriage 8 and the carriage 6 which it crosses.
- This control transmission rod 83 is coupled, outside the carriage 6, to a rod 85 for actuation by a square; this coupling is carried out by bevel gears 86 and 87 mounted on the rods 83 and 85 respectively ( Figures 1 and 2).
- Serving table 7 is also mounted adjustable in length in front of the carriage 6.
- this adjustable dimension is noted L opposite a reference taken with respect to the carriage 6 and constituted by the edge of the shelf 64 fixed to the carriage 6.
- This adjustment of the dimension L is obtained by the lateral rods 65 connecting the carriage 6 and the auxiliary carriage 8.
- These rods are partly threaded. They are locked longitudinally in the walls of the carriage 6 and are inserted in threaded spacers 88 of the carriage 8. They carry at their outer end to the carriage 6, a toothed pinion 66, for their coupling by a chain 67 mounted between these pinions 66.
- One of them is also coupled, at this end, to an actuating rod by a square, not visible but similar to the rod 85, by a pair of bevel gears 68, 69 which they carry. 'one and the other respectively.
- the tray 10 of the entry station can be equipped with a conveyor belt moved during the time of erasure of the stop 12 which closes the passage of the bundle of the tray 10 to the serving table 7.
- the stroke outward and return travel of the drive carriage are consequently shorter than those indicated above, the push fingers simply coming under the stop 12, in the carriage rest position.
- These push fingers remain actuated on the other hand in a similar manner: they are retracted for the return stroke of the carriage and are put in the non-retracted position for the forward stroke of the carriage.
