Description

Method of making contacts with reduced spark or Arcing and Contact Made by Such Process The invention refers to a method of making contacts with reduced sparking or arcing and on one produced by such a process Contact.

It is known that the tendency towards electrical contacts made of precious metals., such as gold, silver, platinum, platinum metals, and from alloys of these precious metals with each other and with base metals to create sparks and arcing with the Usage time decreases. Apparently, snch forms from the initial sparking one consisting mainly of the contact metal oxides, the tendency to spark or Surface layer which reduces arcing. Namely, if you like it is known, in the KontaktweTks.toff, so also in its surface oxides of the contact material stored, the tendency to form sparks or arcs is a priori as low as after prolonged use.

Noble metals, however, form stable oxides with difficulty the introduction of this Ge thank you to practice on difficulties and, against certain, permanent oxides, alloys or composite stiffeners certain composition for use as a contact material remained bound. In particular the compound silver-cadmium has become known for these purposes.

With the method of the invention it is now possible to make contacts from each to provide any metal with a spark inhibiting layer of its own, so that the Tendency to form sparks or arcing is as small as usual from the start only after prolonged use. This is of considerable economic importance; in order to avoid that electrical devices are welded when they are put into operation the switch fails as a result of arcing of the new contacts. Also keep artificially aged contacts retain their smooth surface for a long time, while natural Aging quickly causes crater formation and thereby the service life of the contacts degrades.

According to the invention, this advantage is achieved in that the Kontaktobex surface a high-frequency spark discharge in an oxidizing, especially free atmosphere is exposed. Appropriate to be considered the two poles between which the discharge passes, contacts whose surface is to be treated according to the invention is used.

The voltages preferably used are between 100 and 20,000 volts, the frequencies between 10 5 and 10 hertz. At higher powers, the contact surface remains pitted due to the oxides that disintegrate immediately, which is why lower powers are to be preferred. The exposure time can be short, around 30 sec / cm2. In the case of alternating current switches, both switch contacts are preferably treated according to the invention; in the case of direct current switches, the pretreatment of one of the two contacts can also be omitted.
