Bisher werden die Stickereien auf einem Grund von sogenannten glatten oder leinenartigen Geweben ausgeführt; für die verschiedenen Formen, wie Ornamente, Blumen, Früchte Figuren, Landschaften etc. werden verschiedene Stickarten angewendet. Die Umrisse der Zeichnung werden auf dem Grund aufgezeichnet, die Wahl und Vertheilung der einzelnen Farben bleibt der Stickerin überlassen, welche nach einem gemalten Vorbilde arbeitet. Die Richtung der einzelnen Stiche ist dabei entweder vertical oder horizontal oder nach den Umrissen des Ornamentes. Dieselbe ist also nicht vorgezeichnet, so dafs die Gleichmäfsigkeit der Arbeit vollständig von der Uebung der Stickerin abhängt. Häufig entsteht dadurch ein Gewirr von Stichen, das auf das Auge störend wirkt.
