Description
Title: Plant diagram for the extraction of magnesium and demineralized water from seawater.
Conventional magnesium extraction plants have the disadvantage that they are only profitable to operate in the Dead Sea where the water is very salty. The low-salt water is not thickened. This means that no distilled water is obtained; it evaporates unused.
One possibility to improve existing magnesium extraction plants so that their operation is also worthwhile in normal seas with a lower salinity of about 3.5% is to first thicken the seawater using a seawater desalination plant.
Using the system diagram presented, sea water with a salt content of around 3.5% is thickened to around 6% salt content in a seawater desalination plant and then pumped to the magnesium extraction plant. Above 6% salt content, gypsum scale formation occurs, which is difficult to remove.
In addition, the separated water is demineralized. It can be used for irrigation purposes, as drinking water or for industry, for example.
Due to the increasing desertification and water shortage, it also makes sense to improve magnesium extraction plants so that additional demineralized water can be obtained.
