Even at a time when it can be assumed that a sufficient supply of vitamins is available through food, multivitamin preparations are justified in order to compensate for vitamin deficiencies caused by illness or to meet an increased need for vitamins and minerals during pregnancy and breastfeeding. An additional dose of vitamins has also proven to be effective in certain age-related complaints, to improve performance during periods of mental or physical stress or to speed up healing during convalescence.

The recommended daily intake of vitamins is defined by the German Society for Nutrition, most recently published in the "Reference Values for Nutrient Intake, 1st Edition 2000, Verlag Umschau/Braus". According to a recommendation by the Federal Institute for Consumer Health Protection and Veterinary Medicine, food supplements should not contain more than three times the intake of vitamins per daily dose recommended by the DGE.

Recently there has been evidence that so-called secondary plant ingredients, which are supplied through a varied diet with fruit and vegetables, play a role in the preventive effectiveness of vitamins. The group of secondary plant ingredients includes flavonoids, anthocyanins, carotenoids, phenolic acids and various sulphur compounds.

The DGE recommends a daily intake of around 400 g of vegetables and 250-300 g of fruit to cover the need for secondary plant substances. These values are not achieved in Germany.

It has not yet been proven that there is any benefit to humans from the administration of individual isolated or synthesized secondary plant substances (e.g. beta-carotene). The BgW now recommends avoiding the administration of synthetic beta-carotene.

There are numerous multivitamin and mineral preparations on the market with a wide variety of compositions. There are also some products available that contain extracts from various plants as a dietary supplement.

The invention specified in claim 1 is based on the problem that a food supplement should be developed that ensures that the human organism is supplied with a sufficient, balanced and, above all, comprehensive amount of vitamins, minerals, trace elements and ultra-trace elements in combination with plant secondary substances. The administration of iodide and fluoride should be avoided in this context, since doping table salt and toothpaste with these nutrients already ensures an adequate supply.

This problem is solved by a recipe for a multivitamin and mineral preparation that also contains the secondary plant substances in a plant-enriched form and composition. It also contains an extract from carrots, which provides carotenoids in a natural balance. Minerals, trace elements and ultra-trace elements are included in a balanced composition and quantity. The preparation is intended for oral use in the form of soft gelatin capsules, hard gelatin capsules, dragees or tablets.

The product described combines the advantages of a comprehensive and safely sufficient supply of vitamins, minerals, trace elements and ultra-trace elements with a basic supply of secondary plant substances, whereby these are contained in natural diversity and in natural balance with each other for better effectiveness. The carotenoids contained are provided in natural balance so that a one-sided burden on the organism with synthetic beta-carotene is avoided. In addition, the addition of manganese has been omitted after it has been found that it is hardly possible to safely determine a non-toxic dose. The limit values and recommendations of the EU, the BgVV and the DGE are complied with.
