Multivitaminpräparate haben auch in einer Zeit, in der von einer ausreichenden Zufuhr von Vitaminen mit der Nahrung ausgegangen werden kann, ihre Berechtigung, um durch Krankheiten hervorgerufene Vitaminmangelerscheinungen auszugleichen, oder um einem erhöhten Vitamin- und Mineralstoffbedarf bei Schwangerschaft und Stillzeit gerecht zu werden. Eine zusätzliche Gabe von Vitaminen hat sich zudem bei bestimmten Altersbeschwerden, zur Leistungsverbesserung bei starker geistiger oder körperlicher Belastung oder in der Rekonvaleszens zur Steigerung der Heilungsgeschwindigkeit bewährt.
Die empfohlene tägliche Aufnahme von Vitaminen wird von der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Ernährung, zuletzt in den „Referenzwerten für die Nährstoffzufuhr, 1. Auflage 2000, Verlag Umschau/Braus" veröffentlicht, definiert. Entsprechend einer Empfehlung des Bundesinstitutes für gesundheitlichen Verbraucherschutz und Veterinärmedizin sollen Nahrungsergänzungsmittel nicht mehr als das dreifache der von der DGE empfohlenen Zufuhr von Vitaminen je Tagesdosis enthalten.
Neuerdings gibt es Hinweise darauf, daß im Zusammenhang mit einer präventiven Wirksamkeit von Vitaminen sogenannte sekundäre Pflanzeninhaltsstoffe, die über eine vielfältige Ernährung mit Obst und Gemüse zugeführt werden, eine Rolle spielen. Zur Gruppe der sekundären Pflanzeninhaltsstoffe gehören z.B. Flavonoide, Anthocyane, Carotinoide, Phenolsäuren und div. Schwefelverbindungen.
Die DGE empfiehlt eine tägliche Aufnahme von etwa 400 g Gemüse und 250-300 g Obst, um den Bedarf an sekundären Pflanzenstoffen zu decken. Diese Werte werden in der BRD nicht erreicht.
Ein Vorteil für den Menschen durch die Gabe von einzelnen isolierten oder synthetisierten sekundären Pflanzenstoffen (z.B. ß-Carotin) konnte bislang nicht bewiesen werden. Das BgW empfiehlt heute, auf eine Gabe von synthetischem ß-Carotin zu verzichten.
Auf dem Markt befinden sich zahlreiche Multivitamin- und Mineralstoffpräparate in unterschiedlichster Zusammensetzung. Zudem sind einige Produkte erhältlich, die Extrakte verschiedener Pflanzen als Nahrungsergänzung enthalten.

Der im Schutzanspruch 1 angegebenen Erfindung liegt das Problem zugrunde, daß ein Nahrungsergänzungsmittel entwickelt werden sollte, das sicherstellt, daß der menschliche Organismus mit einer ausreichenden und ausgeglichenen und vor allem umfassenden Menge an Vitaminen, Mineralien, Spurenelementen und Ultraspurenelementen in Kombination mit Pflanzensekundärstoffen versorgt wird. Auf die Gabe von Jodid und Fluorid sollte in diesem Zusammenhang verzichtet werden, da bereits eine Dotierung von Speisesalz und Zahnpasta mit diesen Nährstoffen eine ausreichende Versorgung sicherstellt.
Dieses Problem wird durch eine Rezeptur für ein Multivitamin- und Mineralstoffpräparat gelöst, das zusätzlich die sekundären Pflanzenstoffe in aus Pflanzen angereicherter Form und Zusammensetzung enthält. Zudem enthält es einen Extrakt aus Karotten, der Carotinoide in natürlicher Ausgewogenheit bereitstellt. Mineralien, Spurenelemente und Ultraspurenelemente sind in ausgewogener Zusammensetzung und Menge enthalten. Das Präparat ist zur oralen Anwendung in Form von Weichgelatinekapseln, Hartgelatinekapseln, Dragees oder Tabletten vorgesehen.
Das beschriebene Produkt vereint die Vorteile einer umfassenden und sicher ausreichenden Versorgung mit Vitaminen, Mineralien, Spurenelementen und Ultraspurenelementen mit einer Grundversorgung mit sekundären Pflanzenstoffen, wobei diese aufgrund einer besseren Wirksamkeit in natürlicher Vielfalt und in natürlichem Gleichgewicht zueinander enthalten sind. Die enthaltenen Carotinoide werden in natürlicher Ausgewogenheit bereitgestellt, so daß eine einseitige Belastung des Organismus mit synthetischem ß-Carotin vermieden wird. Zudem wird auf den Zusatz von Mangan verzichtet, nachdem sich herausgestellt hat, daß eine sichere Festsetzung einer nicht toxischen Dosis kaum möglich ist. Die Grenzwerte und Empfehlungen der EU, des BgVV und der DGE werden eingehalten.
