Folding corner made of cardboard, carton or similar.

The invention relates to a folding corner made of cardboard, carton or the like, with a base, a side wall angled at right angles thereto and an end wall extending at right angles to the base and the side wall, wherein the side wall is connected to a plug-in tab which is arranged between the end wall and an end wall inner flap which is folded inwards from the top edge of the end wall and latches.

Such folding corners made of cardboard, paperboard or preferably corrugated cardboard, which essentially consist of three single- or multi-layered surface pieces arranged orthogonally to one another and connected to one another, are used individually as corner protection pads for objects to be packaged and/or transported in order to protect their corners.

In order to make it easier to attach such corner protection pads and at the same time to create continuous edge protection for the edge between the two corners, it is known to connect two such folding corners together in one piece. The distance between the two folding corners must correspond to the distance between the two corners to be protected.

In addition, such folding corners form essential structural components of flat slip-on bases or trays, whereby two adjacent folding corners are connected to each other by a common end wall and end wall inner flap.

What all applications of such known folding corners have in common is that the highest stresses occur in the corner area. Therefore, the material thickness and material properties must be selected so that the stresses expected in the corner area can be absorbed. This is especially true for the floor, as this is usually made of a single layer and is exposed to the increased stresses that occur in the corner area.

The object of the invention is therefore to design a folding corner of the type mentioned at the beginning in such a way that increased protection is achieved at least in the corner area with little additional material required and easy unfolding. At the same time, the folding corner should be suitable for all of the uses mentioned at the beginning, namely as corner protection, as edge protection and as an essential construction element of a slip-on base or tray.

The invention is achieved in that the front wall and the plug-in flap are directly hinged to an outer edge strip which extends over a front edge region of the base and the side wall and is connected to the front edges of the base and the side wall via an intermediate piece, and that the width of the outer edge strip is reduced by at least

The outer edge strip formed here and the intermediate piece underneath it are located in the corner area on the underside of the base and the outside of the side wall, so that these particularly high-stress areas are made of three layers. In the front area there are already three layers of material on top of each other, namely the front wall, the front wall inner flap and the plug-in tab in between. The folding corner is therefore made of three layers in all areas. This provides a very high level of protection even when using relatively thin material.

In a further development of the inventive concept, it is intended to create an edge protector made of cardboard, paperboard or the like, which consists of two folding corners connected to one another in one piece at the bottom and at the side wall, with at least one of the two folding corners being designed in the previously described, inventive manner.

In a further embodiment of the inventive concept, it is provided to create a slip-on base or tray made of cardboard, carton or the like, with four interconnected folding corners having a common base, wherein at least at one end of the slip-on base two folding corners are designed and interconnected in the manner described above.

are connected to one another in one piece. This not only provides the entire front area of the slip-on base with significant reinforcement through the outer edge strip running in one piece from one side wall across the base to the other side wall with an intermediate piece underneath, but also provides very good cohesion in the front area, which has a significantly positive effect on the stability of the entire slip-on base.

A significant advantage of the folding corner according to the invention when used as edge protection or slip-on base is that edge protection parts of different lengths or slip-on bases of different lengths can be made from one and the same cut by selecting different widths of the outer edge strip and thus also the width of the intermediate piece that depends on this. To do this, it is sufficient to simply rearrange the folding lines at which the intermediate piece is connected to the outer edge strip on the one hand and to the base on the other hand, without changing the cut in any other way.

In an advantageous embodiment of the inventive concept, it is provided that, in a blank for an edge protector and/or a slip-on base of the above-mentioned design, different widths of outer edge strips and intermediate pieces are divided by transverse folding lines. If these folding lines for different widths of outer edge strips and intermediate pieces are already provided on the blank, the same blank can be erected in different lengths, so that it is possible to adapt to the required dimensions in a simple manner without any additional measures being required when preparing and producing the blank. The intermediate piece is folded over at the base or side wall, placed at the desired location and the outer edge strip is then folded over from the intermediate piece in such a way that the outer edge strip protrudes beyond the front edge of the base by an amount at least equal to the thickness of the material.

In any case, there remains a gap or gap between the front edge of the floor and the inside of the bulkhead, into which the free edge of the bulkhead inner flap snaps when it is erected. This eliminates the need to provide any locking tabs or locking recesses.

The folding corner 1 made of corrugated cardboard shown in Fig. 1 serves in this simplest embodiment as corner protection for objects to be packed or transported. A base is provided with a side wall angled upwards at a right angle.

3. An end wall 4 extends at right angles to the base 2 and at right angles to the side wall 3. An outer edge strip 5 consists of an outer edge strip base section 5a and an outer edge strip side section 5b. The outer edge strip 5 lies on the underside of the base 2 and on the outside of the side wall 3.

The end wall 4 is directly hinged to the base section 5a of the outer edge strip 5. The outer edge strip 5, which extends over a front edge region of the base 2 and the side wall 3, is connected to a front edge 6 of the base 2 and a front edge 7 of the side wall 3 via an intermediate piece 8, which consists of an intermediate piece base section 8a and an intermediate piece side section 8b. A folding edge 9 is located at the connection point of the outer edge strip 5 with the intermediate piece 8.

The width bl of the outer edge strip 5 is greater than the width b2 of the intermediate piece 8 (Fig. 4) by an amount that corresponds at least to the material thickness of the corrugated cardboard used. As a result, in the erected state (Fig. 1), a gap 10 remains between the front edge β of the base 2 and the front edge 7 of the side wall 3 on the one hand and the inside of the front wall 4 on the other hand, the width of which gap 10 corresponds at least to the material thickness.

A front wall inner flap 12 is folded inwards from the front wall upper edge 11 and is locked into this gap 10 with its edge. A plug-in tab 13 is hinged to the front edge of the side section 5b of the outer edge strip 5 and, in the erected state, lies between the front wall 4 and the front wall inner flap 12.

The folding corner 1 thus formed is designed in three layers in all three wall areas aligned orthogonally to one another and therefore offers considerable impact protection in all directions for the corner of an object to be protected, even when using relatively thin material.

Fig. 2 shows a slip-on base 14 or a tray made of corrugated cardboard, the four corners of which are designed like the folding corner 1 described. All four folding corners 1 are connected in one piece to the common base 2 and are made from a one-piece blank (4). Two folding corners 1 forming a common front side of the slip-on base 14 are also connected in one piece to the common front wall 4, the common front wall inner flap 12, the common outer edge strip 5 and the common intermediate piece 8.

To better understand the erection process, Fig. 3 shows an intermediate stage in the erection of the slip-on base 14. It can be seen that the plug-in tabs 13 hinged to the two outer edge strip side sections 5b are placed on the inside of the front wall 4 before the front wall inner flap 12 is folded inwards and engages in the gap 10.

Fig. 4 shows a blank for the manufacture of the slip-on base according to Fig. 2. At the bottom end of the blank in Fig. 4, only one uniform width bl is provided for the outer edge strip 5. In contrast to this, at the upper end of the blank in Fig. 4, several transverse fold lines are provided, through which different widths of outer edge strip 5 and intermediate pieces 8 are divided. Thus, at the upper end of the blank in Fig. 4, the outer edge

strip 5 and the intermediate piece 8 are divided into the widths bl and b2 in the same way as at the lower blank end by the fold lines 6 and 9. Instead, it is also possible to specify the widths b2' and bl ¹ for corresponding outer edge strips and intermediate pieces by means of additional transverse fold lines 6' and 9', whereby the length of the slip-on base 14 is shortened by the desired amount.

Two of the folding corners 1 shown in Fig. 1 can be connected in one piece at their base 2 and their side wall 3 to form an edge protector. Instead, it is also possible to design only one of the two folding corners of such an edge protector in the manner described in Fig. 1, while the other folding corner is designed in the conventional manner without an outer edge strip 5.

An example of a cut for two such edge protection parts is shown in Fig. 5. By unfolding the cut, a slip-on base is created similar to the slip-on base 14 described in Fig. 2. However, since the cut according to Fig. 5 is divided into two equal halves by a central, longitudinal, easily tearable cut 15, the unfolded slip-on base can then be easily dismantled into two edge protection parts, each of which has two folding corners.

Two folding corners 1 of the design described in Fig. 1 are created from the cut end arranged at the top in Fig. 5, whereby length adjustment is made possible by choosing different widths of the outer edge strip 5 or the intermediate piece 8. Two conventional folding corners without outer edge strip 5 are formed from the lower cut end in Fig. 5 by simply unfolding.

Claims (5)

1. Folding corner made of cardboard, paperboard or the like, with a base, a side wall angled at right angles thereto and an end wall extending at right angles to the base and the side wall, the side wall being connected to a plug-in tab which is arranged between the end wall and an end wall inner flap which is folded inwards from the top edge of the end wall and latches, characterized in that the end wall ( 4 ) and the plug-in tab ( 13 ) are directly hinged to an outer edge strip ( 5 ) which extends over a front edge region of the base ( 2 ) and the side wall ( 3 ) and is connected to the front edges ( 6 and 7 ) of the base ( 2 ) and the side wall ( 3 ) via an intermediate piece ( 8 ), and that the width (b1) of the outer edge strip ( 5 ) is greater than the width (b2) by an amount at least corresponding to the material thickness. of the intermediate piece ( 8 ). 2. Edge protection made of cardboard, carton or the like, consisting of two folding corners integrally connected to one another at the bottom and at the side wall, characterized in that at least one of the two folding corners is designed according to claim 1. 3. Slip-on base made of cardboard, carton or the like with four interconnected folding corners having a common base, characterized in that at least at one end of the slip-on base ( 14 ) two folding corners ( 1 ) are designed according to claim 1 and are interconnected. 4. Slip-on base according to claim 3, characterized in that the two folding corners ( 1 ) on the base ( 2 ), on the front wall ( 4 ), on the side wall inner flap ( 12 ), on the outer edge strip ( 5 ) and on the intermediate piece ( 8 ) are connected to one another in one piece. 5. Blank for an edge protector according to claim 2 and/or a slip-on base according to claim 3 or 4, characterized in that outer edge strips ( 5 ) and intermediate pieces ( 8 ) of different widths are separated by transverse folding lines ( 6 , 9 , 6 ', 9 ').
