Für die meisten Sportarten muß der Schuh in Laufrichtung biegsam und beweglich bleiben. Im übrigen soll er dem Fuß eine gewisse Seitenstabilität garantieren, um Gelenke, Sehnen und Muskeln des Fußes zu schonen. Bekannte Sportschuhe, die einen hohen, bis über die Knöchel reichenden Schaft besitzen, werden bisher durch in Fersenhöhe verlaufende Versteifungseinsätze verstärkt, um die gewünschte seitliche Festigkeit zu erreichen.
