Description

Freewheel clutch. The present invention relates to a freewheel clutch intended in particular for coupling the shafts of the starting motor and of the operating motor in electrical lighting and starting devices for automobiles, and in which each of the recesses each intended to receive a locking ball is constituted by corresponding notches formed in the opposite surfaces of a wheel connected to the explosion engine and of a ring integral with the shaft of the starting motor , the check mark dle the latter having cune length greater than the diameter of the ball and being limited, on the bottom, by a coaxial cylindrical surface of the crown itself and at its ends by cylindrical surfaces having the same radius as the marble.

In the accompanying drawing is shown, by way of example, an embodiment of the clutch according to the invention and FIG. 1 is the axial section along filg. 2, while fig. 2 is the dirty cross section according to x-x fig. 1.

In said figures, 1 indicates the shaft of the dynamo which is coaxial with the hollow shaft 2 of the electric starting motor, and which is integral, through the intermediary of the disc 3, with the pinion 4 in front of in turn be connected with the shaft of the explosion engine.

The pinion 4 is mounted idle, by means of the ball bearings 5, on the hollow shaft and is provided, at its internal periphery, with a ring gear 6 located vis-à-vis the integral crown 7. tree 2.

The crown d has at one or more points of its internal periphery (three in the case shown) a notch formed by two cavities connected together, one shallower 8 and the other more deep S ', these two cavities being limited at the ends by cylindrical surfaces.

The crown 7 comprises, at as many points, symmetrical notches 9, the ends of which are formed by cylindrical surfaces having as guidelines the ai = es of a circle.

The depth of each notch 8 and 9 must be approximately equal to the radius of the ball 10 intended to take place in said notch, each ball constituting a locking member between the crowns 6 and 7, while the cavities 8 'must have a depth greater than the diameter of said ball.

It is clear that under these conditions, assuming that the direction of rotation of pinion 4 during operation of the internal combustion engine is that of the arrow in fig. 2, when the shaft 2 is rotated to carry out the start-up, the balls 10 are engaged in the notches 8 and 9 and thereby the shaft 2 drives the pinion 4; on the other hand, when the engine is started and the pinion 4 continues to turn, the shaft 2 being stopped, the balls 10 enter the cavities 8 'and the shaft 2 is released from the pinion 4 without the balls being able to seize between the opposing surfaces of crowns 6 and 7.

Given that the cavities 8 'have a depth greater than the diameter of the balls 10, and that they are formed in the ring 6 which is kept in rotation during the operation of the combustion engine, the balls are held by the central force. trifuge on the bottom of the cavities S 'and this prevents them from coming into contact with the crown 7; all noise and wear of parts are therefore eliminated.

In the case where the pinion 4 must turn in the direction opposite to the arrow, it suffices to reverse said pinion in order to obtain the same operation in the opposite direction.

In the example shown, it has been assumed that the shaft of the dynamo is coaxial with that of the starting motor, but naturally the device described can be applied also in cases where the dy namo is separated.
