Description
-CA 022038~4 1997-04-28 MIRROR ARRANGEMENT WITH DEPTH EFFECT
The invention is directed to a mirror arrangement with a depth effect, in particular for the embellishment of rooms, substantially comprising two mirrors which are arranged at a distance from one another with their mirror surfaces parallel to one another, wherein the front mirror forming the viewing side of the mirror arrangement is partially transparent.
Mirror arrangements of this kind are known in general. They are chiefly used in connection with mirror display cases, display window arrangements, showrooms, theatrical scenery or the like. Corresponding mirror arrangements are described in DE 27 30 679 A1 and in DE 38 10 520 C2-. These mirror arrangements are intended to convey an impression of infinite depth to an observer looking through the partially transparent front mirror into the space located behind it. When objects are located between the two mirrors, the observer sees these objects in virtually endless series one after the other; both the front and rear of the object are reflected and these reflections alternate with each other. If the front and rear mirrors are in a plane-parallel configuration relative to one another, the light rays are reflected in themselves so that the mirror images of the object lose contrast relatively quickly and become darker as the simulated depth of the room increases, so that the more spatially remote reflections can hardly be discerned.
It is also known from the references mentioned above to rotate either the front mirror or the rear mirror out of the plane-parallel position by a determined angle relative to the other mirror, so that the mirror images of the object no longer CA 022038~4 1997-04-28 , appear to the observer in a straight line one after the other, but rather in different directions depending upon the angle that is formed.
Of course, known mirror arrangements of this kind require a relatively large depth also in order to be able to arrange objects between the two mirror walls.
For this reason, these known mirror arrangements are not suitable as wall elements in rooms or as tabletops or the like because they would take up too much space.
The object of the invention is to improve the mirror arrangement mentioned above in such a way that it can have a small structural depth while still retaining the decorative depth effect and, further, can also be used for advertising purposes.
According to the invention, this object is met in that the opaque mirror coating or film of the rear mirror in a mirror arrangement of the type mentioned above is provided with engravings or with removed areas from which the mirror film is absent and through which light can travel, wherein a light source is provided behind the rear mirror.
The mirroring of a front view and a rear view is prevented in that no objects or the like are arranged between the two mirrors, but rather the engraving or removed areas intended for reflection are provided directly in the mirror film of the rear mirror in the plane of this rear mirror, so to speak. Exclusively the front view of the engraving or removed areas is mirrorèd; these engravings or removed areas likewise repeat apparently infinitely, but the quantity of repeating reflections receding into the background amounts to only half of the quantity of reflections in the known mirror arrangements described above. Due to the fact that the engravings or partial surfaces are provided directly in the plane of the rear mirror CA 022038~4 1997-04-28 rather than between the two mirrors, the spacing of the reflections or images is twice as great while the absolute depth remains the same.
The reflections become increasingly darker as they recede to the rear;
they repeat approximately 10 times so that the apparent mirror depth is approximately 20 times the distance between the two mirrors.
In a further development according to the invention, the engraving or removed areas are advertising texts and advertising designs or patterns. Due to the fact that, in contrast to the mirror arrangements described above, there are no rear views of the engravings or removed areas, it is also possible for these engravings and removed areas to be text which is always correctly reproduced as seen by the observer, that is, not mirror-inverted.
The mirror arrangement according to the invention is advantageously formed as a closed box. In this form, the mirror arrangement can be used as an easily managed "building block" with different dimensions for furnishing and for arranging on the walls of rooms.
The light source is advantageously formed as a closed box which is arranged behind the engraved mirror and which has the same length and width as the mirror arrangement. This embodiment particularly ensures a uniform illumination of the engravings and partial surfaces provided in the rear mirror.
In a further development of the mirror arrangement in accordance with the invention, the rear mirror is constructed in two parts which contact one another along the vertical center axis of the mirror arrangement, but which are not oriented in a plane-parallel configuration relative to one another with respect to their surfaces, but rather are offset relative to one another by an angle a toward the front CA 022038~4 1997-04-28 relative to the front mirror. This construction of the mirror arrangement ensures that the center surface of the mirror arrangement which is kept free of engraving and removed areas is increased compared with the plane-parallel arrangement. Such a mirror arrangement, according to the invention, can thus be used very advantageously as a wardrobe mirror or as a clothing store mirror, for example.
An embodiment example which does not limit the invention is described more fully in the following with reference to the drawings.
Fig. 1 a is a perspective view of the mirror arrangement;
Fig. 1 b is a view of the rear mirror in which flowers are engraved in the mirror film on the left-hand and right-hand sides and the word "ADVERTISEMENT" is engraved at the upper edge;
Fig. 2 is a schematic view of the mirror effect of the mirror arrangement in a plane-parallel arrangement of the rear mirror relative to the front mirror; and Fig. 3 is a schematic view of the mirror effect in a mirror arrangement with a two-part rear mirror whose two parts are offset relative to the plane-parallel mirror plane.
The mirror arran-gement 1 which will be described in more detail hereinafter is substantially formed of two mirrors 2 and 3 which are arranged at a distance a from one another in a plane-parallel configuration in the mirror arrangement 1 shown in Fig. 1a. The front mirror 2 forming the viewing side of the CA 022038~4 1997-04-28 ' mirror arrangement 1 is partially transparent, i.e., it offers the observer an unobstructed view of the mirror 3 which has an opaque mirror surface 4. The observer can see himself clearly and distinctly when looking into the mirror arrangement 1; the multiple reflections of the observer produced by this mirror arrangement are at least partially hidden behind the first reflection so that the primary reflection is clear and distinct.
When this mirror arrangement 1 is outfitted in accordance with the present solution, the mirror film 4 of the rear mirror 3 has engraving or removed areas 5 in which there is no mirroring effect. Rather, these engravings and removed areas 4 are transparent. Sandblasting or grit blasting with the aid of stencils or templates is especially suitable for producing such removed areas. The interrupted surface of the glass which is produced by this treatment reflects the light particularly well and the illustrations are lit up very intensively and distinctly.
These appliqués 5 should be provided at the side of the middle surface of the mirror 3 as is shown in Fig. 1 b so as to retain a usable middle surface. In order for these appliqués 5 to be clearly discernible, a box 6 corresponding to the dimensions of the mirror 3 in length and width is provided behind the mirror 3. Light sources, not shown in the drawings, are provided in the box 6. The arrangement of these light sources can correspond to the arrangement of the appliqués 5 in the rear mirror and the light sources can serve to brightly illuminate the appliqués 5 so that they are also reflected by the front mirror.2.
Since these appliqués, that~ is, the engravings and removed areas, always have only one front side, that is, since the back side of these appliqués is CA 022038~4 1997-04-28 not reflected, they are always reproduced only in the correct original form, that is, not in mirror-inverted form.
Accordingly, these appliqués 5 can also consist exclusively of text, for example. This text also remains legible through the approximately ten repeated reflections.
Due to the fact that no objects are provided between the front mirror 2 and rear mirror 3, the distance a between the two mirrors can be kept relatively small so that this mirror arrangement 1 according to the invention is especially suited for decorating bathrooms, wardrobes, clothing stores or the like, but can also be used as an advertising medium or carrier because the advertising text provided in the rear mirror 3, or in its mirror film 4, can easily be read when looking into the mirror.
The mirror effect of the mirror arrangement 1 shown in Fig. 1 a with mirrors 2 and 3 arranged in a plane-parallel configuration is shown schematically in Fig. 2. There is a usable mirror surface X which is free of engraving and removed areas for an observer standing in front of the mirror.
In another embodiment form shown in Fig. 3, the rear mirror 3 is divided along its vertical center axis in order to increase this usable mirror surface X, if necessary. The two mirror parts 3' are offset toward the front at an angle a relative to the front mirror 2 out of the plane of the vertical center axis. Due to this arrangement of the two parts 3' of the rear mirror, the usable mirror surface.X is widened in that the appliqués arranged at the edge c are not reproduced.
This effect is due to the fact that the lines b shown in Fig. 2 in the arrangement of the parts 3' of the rear mirror shown in Fig.. 3 do not extend in a straight line, but rather run along a curving path b'.
The angle a is selected based on the spacing a between the two mirrors 2 and 3 and on the most common distance of the observer from the overall mirror arrangement. The angle a should be between 0~ and 5~.

Of course, known mirror arrangements of this kind require a relatively large depth also in order to be able to arrange objects between the two mirror walls.
For this reason, these known mirror arrangements are not suitable as wall elements in rooms or as tabletops or the like because they would take up too much space.

The light source is advantageously formed as a closed box which is arranged behind the engraved mirror and which has the same length and width as the mirror arrangement. This embodiment particularly ensures a uniform illumination of the engravings and partial surfaces provided in the rear mirror.

Such a mirror arrangement, according to the invention, can thus be used very advantageously as a wardrobe mirror or as a clothing store mirror, for example.
An embodiment example which does not limit the invention is described more fully in the following with reference to the drawings.
Fig. 1 a is a perspective view of the mirror arrangement;
Fig. 1 b is a view of the rear mirror in which flowers are engraved in the mirror film on the left-hand and right-hand sides and the word "ADVERTISEMENT" is engraved at the upper edge;
