Abstract
Valence of a metal with a variable valence is modified in organic soln. by forming a dispersion by agitating the org. soln. with an immiscible aqueous soln. and passing an electric current through the dispersion in the cathodic zone of an electrolysis chamber, if a lower valence state is required, or the anodic zone of the chamber, if a higher valence state is required, the cathode and anode zones being separated by a porous membrane, and the electric current being passed into the dispersion while the aqs. soln. acting as electrolyte is maintained as continuous phase.
