including the best method of performing it known to us:- (File: 21190.00) -i la Coolant Powders Cross-Reference to Related Application This Application claims the benefit of United States Provisional Application Number 601056,975 filed on 26 August 1997, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety.
Field of the invention This invention is related to compositions which impart a comfortably cool and dry feeling to the skin without the burning sensation or the harsh odor normally associated with menthol, and methods which accomplish the same.
Background of the Invention and Prior Art Hot and humid weather can quickly make one feel uncomfortable. As the temperature rises, sweat glands are stimulated to excrete sweat for evaporative heat loss in response to thermal stress. It makes one feel sticky, greasy, and itchy, especially during the summer months. Bathing can only bring temporary relief, while the use of mentholated powder with harsh cooling agents, such as menthol, camphor and other agents having a strong cooling effect and odor, can irritate those with sensitive skin, such as children.
Various compositions for pharmaceutical and cosmetic adsorbent powders can be found in the art. It is quite common in these adsorbent powders to use menthol as a cooling agent Menthol, however, has a strong odor associated with it, and can have a stinging effect on the skin.
Ketals are also known in the art for their cooling properties, as described in U.S. Patent No. 5,266,592. U.S. Patent No. 5,451,404 describes coolant compositions that comprise a ketal in combination with a
I
-2secondary coolant consisting of menthol, a carboxyamide, or a mixture thereof.
It would be desirable to provide a refreshing powder that contains a unique cooling agent capable of providing a mild cooling sensation to the skin without the accompanying strong odor associated with cooling agents known in the art. It would further be desirable to have a powder that also would relieve itchiness.
"Summary of the Invention In accordance with the present invention, I have found a composition 10 comprising: a powder component; and b) a cooling agent selected from: i) menthyl pyrrolidone carboxylate (Menthyl PCA); ii) cydohexanol, 5-methyl-2-(1-methylethenyl)-; iii) 5-methyl-2-(1-methyl ethyl)-cydohexyl-2hydroxypropionate,l-menthyl lactate, acidl-menthyl ester (Menthyl Lactate); or iv) mixtures thereof.
In another embodiment of the present invention, I have found a method for imparting a cool and dry feeling to the skin comprising applying to the skin a composition comprising: a) a powder component; and b) a cooling agent selected from: i) menthyl pyrrolidone carboxylate (Menthyl PCA); ii) cyclohexanol, 5-methyl-2-(1-methylethenyl)-; -3 iii) 5-methyl-2{1 -methyl ethyl)-cydohoxyl-2hydroxypropionate.1-menthyl lactate, acid/-menthyl ester (Menthyl Lactate); or iv) mixtures thereof.
in yet another embodiment of the present invention, I have found a method for relieving itchiness on the skin comprising topically applying to the skin a composition comprising: a) a powder component; and b) a cooling agent selected from: 10 Q) ketals; ii) menthyl pyrrolidone carboxylate (Menthyt PCA); iii) cyclohexanol, 5-methyl-2-(1-melhylethelyl)-; iv) 5-methyl-2-(1 -methyl ethyl)-cydoahexyl-2hydroxypropionate.l-mleflthyl lactate, acidl-menthyl ester (Menthyl Lactate); or v) mixtures thereof, with the proviso that when the cooling agent is a ketal, the composition is substantially free of menthol, carboxyamides. and mixtures thereof.
In still another embodiment of the present invention, I have found a method of making a powder composition comprising a) a powder component;, and b) a cooling agent selected from: Q) ketals; ii) menthyl pyrrolidone carboxylate (Menthyt PCA); iii) cyclohexanol, 5-methyl-2-(1-methylethefl)iv) 5-methyl-2-(1 -methyl ethyt)-cyclohexyl-2hydroxypropionate.l-menthyl lactate, acd/-menthyl ester (Menthyl Lactate); or -4v) mixtures thereof, with the proviso that when the cooling agent is a ketal, the composition is substantially free of menthol, carboxyamides, and mixtures thereof, comprised of: i) dissolving the cooling agent in a liquid perfume with stirring under conditions sufficient to form a premixture; ii) spraying the premixture into the powder component; and iii) mixing the product of (ii).
The compositions and methods of this invention provide a unique, convenient means for imparting a cool and dry feeling to the skin andlor relieving itchiness on the skin, without requiring the use of ingredients with a harsh odor or stinging effect Detailed Description of the invention The powder component of the composition of the present invention is preferably talc; starch; cellulose or a derivative thereof; or mixtures thereof.
More preferably, the powder component is sterilized talc, comstarch, or a mixture thereof, and is most preferably sterilized talc. The powder component is present in an amount, based upon the total weight of the composition, of from about 50% to about 100%, and more preferably from about 70% to about 99%. As used herein, "sterilized" refers to talc which is processed under methods known in the ar in order to control the amount of microbial contamination therein. Although a powder component of any particle size is acceptable for use in the present invention, a particle size distribution which requires at least 95% of the particles to pass through a 200 mesh screen is preferred, and a particle size distribution for a 350 mesh screen is most preferred.
i 11*: The second component of the composition of the present invention is a cooling agent The preferred cooling agents of the present invention are structurally related to menthol, and therefore possess the beneficial skintreating properties of menthol without retaining its deleterious properties, such as a harsh odor and a stinging effect. These cooling agents operate by reacting with enzymes on the skin to form menthol, and, in certain instances, other therapeutic skin agents as well. Furthermore, these cooling agents can relieve itchiness on the skin.
