The system for producing the aggregate comprises: (i) an inlet for water containing divalent cations; (ii) a precipitation station of carbonate compounds that subjects the water to precipitation conditions of carbonate compounds and produces a precipitated carbonate compound composition; and (iii) a producer of aggregates to produce an aggregate of a Mohs hardness of at least 3 Mohs from the composition of precipitated carbonate compounds. The resulting aggregate has use in a variety of different applications, for example, in the production of mortars and concrete, as well as asphalt and other construction materials. The aggregates serve to sequester CO2 from an initial gaseous stream containing CO2, for example, stably storing the CO2 in the built environment.
