A linguistic approach to metrics, based on Jakobson’s concepts of design, instance and delivery, ... more A linguistic approach to metrics, based on Jakobson’s concepts of design, instance and delivery, leads to a revision of received ideas on the Galician-Portuguese Medieval Lyric. Metrical structure incorporates design at various levels – poem, strophe, verse – and editors are bound to implement the metrical structure they infer in a poem, or explain deviations as error or conscious variation (tension). Poems may have two simultaneous structures. Elision and synaloepha are graphemic or phonetic variants of the metrical process of conflation. Three different types of verse design – accentual-syllabic, syllabic and accentual --, can be detected in the medieval lyric, and can only be represented by an extension of the notational system. Many poems have simultaneous accentual and accentual-syllabic organisation. Pure syllabic verse permits hitherto unrecognised features of poem design.

These rhymes are studied for their frequency, difficulty (measured by the number of words available to make the rhyme), and ranking (the number of poems in which it is used and the average length of those poems). The most difficult rhymes are usually the most difficult, and are used as a last resort at the end of long poems, requiring poets to perform linguistic gymnastics to accommodate the content of the rhyme words

The second phase of the evolution of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, represented by the códice rico ... more The second phase of the evolution of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, represented by the códice rico and the first half of the códice de los músicos, entailed a thorough revision of the principles by which poems had been ordered in the earliest compilation (represented by the Toledo manuscript). This paper details how poems were reordered, discarded and inserted, while leaving many sequences intact.

The four manuscripts of the Cantigas de Santa Maria are a rare case of a manuscript tradition mad... more The four manuscripts of the Cantigas de Santa Maria are a rare case of a manuscript tradition made up of independent compilations of poems drawn from a central archive. This means that the focus of textual criticism has to be the individual poem rather than the manuscript. Previous studies have found evidence of revision , recomposition, parallel composition, and merging of separate compositions, all of which point to the complexity of the gestation of the poetic texts. Less attention has been given to the textual variation resulting from the preparation of texts for compilation. In this article we study three poems —cantigas 335, 204 and 124— in which the differences between the two extant versions cannot be explained as divergent copyings of a common model, but require the reconstruction of a sequence of intermediate copies, which we term internal transmission.

In the manuscripts of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, the refrains following each strophe, as well a... more In the manuscripts of the Cantigas de Santa Maria, the refrains following each strophe, as well as the rubrics preceding each poem, are copied in red ink, into spaces left after the copying of the body of the text in black ink. This creates two specific constraints: the need to fit text into predetermined spaces, and the repetition inherent in copying the same text many times over. The task was probably delegated to junior copyists, meaning that many pages have more than one hand represented. Close study of the copying of refrains reveals that the copyists used a range of devices to vary and justify the text of refrains, and that copying could proceed across the whole page rather than column by column.

These include not only paratexts like the rubrics, but the refrains, the opening strophes which either gloss the refrain or link back to it, and closing strophes which offer praise to the Blessed Virgin. many of these added elements are prefabricated or use text taken from a central repertoire.
