Digital music making is evolving dramatically with today's increasing availability of free music software and musical content. Digitopia, a platform for collaborative music creation recently started at Casa da Musica, Porto's main concert venue, addresses how these trends can affect generalized music creation and music software design, promote social inclusion, and lead to the emergence of multicultural communities of music makers/lovers. In this paper, we report on the musical activities conducted in the first months of existence of Digitopia, and highlight some developments for the future.

In Urban Forestry, the inventory and assessment of the phytosanitary status and risk situations of plants are essential on management, contributing to the knowledge of tree conditions and to the choice of interventions to be performed. These studies are usually time-consuming because they require careful analysis of field data and additional time for registration in a digital format. In order to reduce the time taken to register the field data a mobile application based on the AppSheet® platform (www.appsheet.com) was developed. This application was used in the evaluation of 24.360 single trees carried out in the Oporto city parks. The IDTree application allows the digital registration of the dendrometric and phytosanitary variables of trees, the registration of photographic records of the overall state or particular conditions of trees, and their georeferentiation, being able to read information from QR-Code tags. The IDTree is a valuable resource in fieldwork of urban forestry stu...

ABSTRACT Breeding ospreys (Pandion haliaetus) were still common along the Portuguese coast at the beginning of the 20th century. By 1978 only two pairs remained on the coast of south-west Portugal and in 2003 the last remaining individual disappeared. A five year reintroduction project was set up in 2011 at the Alqueva dam in the Alentejo region. It was implemented by the CIBIO, with funding from EDP, the Portuguese Electric Company and collaboration with organisations in the donor countries of Finland and Sweden. Prior to air transportation, prophylactic antioxidant therapy was administrated to avoid capture myopathy. Individual health-screening was undertaken when the birds arrived in Portugal to characterize health status through clinical examination and through establishing physiological parameters, including blood biochemistry and hematology, age, sex and body condition. This was repeated during hacking and/or before the birds were released. No pathogenic agents were detected in the screening process (which included tests for Avian Influenza, Newcastle’s Disease and Salmonella) except for one individual in which an internal parasite (trematode) was found. During the project we have faced some challenges, with 10 clinical cases (involving nine out of 44 nestlings) including birds diagnosed with nutritional deficiencies (secondary osteodystrophy and weight loss), traumatic lesions (fractures, luxations, tendon ruptures), and behavioural disorder (featherplucking). Despite these issues 40 ospreys have been successfully released into the wild through hacking. Four post-release casualties have been detected involving one collision with a fence and three deaths from predation. The first birds returned to the hacking area in April 2015, offering encouragement that the project will succeed in its aims.

Laser flash photolysis of 5-nitro-2-furaldehyde (NFA) in solution shows a short-lived transient absorption with λmax = 475 ± 5 nm, which is relatively insensitive to solvent polarity and is assigned to the lowest triplet state of NFA ((3)NFA*). In water, the (3)NFA* absorption decays to a long-lived absorption, the study of which, at different times after the end of the laser pulse, reveals it to be due to a furyloxyl radical (λmax ≈ 375 nm) and to the radical anion NFA˙(-) (λmax ≈ 400 nm). These radicals were produced independently to confirm the assignment. The lifetime of (3)NFA* depends both on the solvent and the ground-state concentration of NFA. An (n, π*) nature is attributed to (3)NFA* on the basis of the propensity of (3)NFA* to abstract a hydrogen-atom from the solvent. Kinetic evidence for triplet excimer formation was obtained from the self-quenching of (3)NFA* in solvents where the triplet decay is slower. The effect of acidity on the triplet lifetime is discussed with...

CpG methylation at early promoter of HPV16 DNA, in the 3' end of the Long Control Region (3'LCR), has been associated to the presence of episomal forms of viral genome and, consequently, intact E1 and E2 ORFs. The DNA methylation would block the access of E2 viral protein to the E2 binding sites at early-promoter. However, is still unclear if methylation at 3'LCR of HPV16 DNA can also vary depending of other tumor characteristics in addition to viral DNA physical state. In this study, we evaluate whether the methylation level at the five CpG located at 3'LCR of HPV16 is associated to patient age and E1 and/or E2 ORFs integrity. DNA pyrosequencing was used to measure the methylation level in 69 invasive cervical cancer samples obtained from biopsies of patients attended at Brazilian National Institute of Cancer (INCA). PCR amplifications were performed to assess disruption status of E1 and E2 genes of HPV16. The methylation average per sample ranged widely, from <1 to 88.00%. Presence of intact E1/E2 genes and patient age were positively associated with average methylation in both bivariate analyses (p=0.003 and p=0.006, respectively), and multivariate analysis (p=0.002 and p=0.021, respectively), adjusted for tumor type (squamous cell carcinomas or adenocarcinomas) and HPV16 lineage. These findings showed that presence of intact E1/E2 open reading frames was associated with high levels of DNA methylation, and older patients showed higher levels of methylation than younger ones independently of viral genome disruption.

Background: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) natural history studies have revealed that human cancer is a rare consequence of an infection by some mucosa tropic high risk-HPV of this common sexually transmitted infection. HPV integration and persistent infection are critical events in progression to cervical carcinogenesis. Objectives: Study of viral load and integration of HPV-16 in samples with different clinical/pathological status.Materials and Methods: A total of 73 cervical samples infected with HPV-16 were retrospectively evaluated: 8 negative cytology, 4 ASC-H, 16 CIN1, 23 CIN2/3, 13 carcinoma and 9 treated carcinoma. DNA samples were extracted by a commercial kit (Qiagen). After spectrophotometrical quantification, the amplification was performed by in house PCR with set of primers: MY09/MY11 or PGMY09/ PGMY11. β-globin was used as internal control. HPV types were determinated by RFLP, with RsaI and DdeI or by Microarrays (Papillocheck). Viral load was performed by real time PCR,...

Recent research has focused on the links between long memory and structural change, stressing the long memory properties that may arise in models with parameter changes. In this paper, we contribute to this research by comparing the forecasting abilities of long memory and Markov switching models. Two approaches are employed: a Monte Carlo study and an empirical comparison, using the quarterly Consumer Price inflation rate in Portugal in the period 1968-1998. Although long memory models may capture some in-sample features of the data, when shifts occur in the series considered, their forecast performance is relatively poor, when compared with simple linear and Markov switching models. Moreover, our findings, in a more general framework, are in accordance with the works of Clements and Hendry (1998) and Clements and Krolzig (1998), reinforcing the idea that simple linear time series models remain useful tools for prediction.

a high and low risk for oncogenic potential. Given the importance of the disease it causes, and the use of different laboratorial techniques, mainly techniques of molecular biology, it is mandatory to have an External Quality Assurance (EQA) program base on harmonized standards that rely on consistent controls. The participation in EQA’s programs is mandatory in laboratories with an ISO 15189/17025 accreditation implemented.

Much less is known about grass-pollen allergens to dogs, when compared with humans. Genetic-based patterns might play an important role in sensitization profiles, conditioning the success of allergen-specific immunotherapy. Mapping of Dactylis glomerata (D. glomerata) and Phleum pratense (P. pratense) allergens for grass pollen-sensitized atopic dogs, for better understanding how individual allergograms may influence the response to grass-pollen immunotherapy. To identify D. glomerata and P. pratense allergoms for dogs, 15 individuals allergic to grass pollen and sensitized to D. glomerata and P. pratense were selected. D. glomerata and P. pratense proteomes were separated by isoelectric focusing (IEF), one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Separated proteins were blotted onto Polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membranes and allergens were identified by patient sera IgE in Western Blotting (WB). In D. glo...

Abstract Strategic management research has shown growing interest in understanding the dynamic resource reconfiguration processes through which firms grow, evolve, and sustain profitability. The goal of our study is to understand how dynamic resource reconfigurations enable firms to pursue growth opportunities. We use the methods of inductive theory building from case studies to elaborate current theoretical understanding about how firms draw on both internal and external resources in the pursuit of growth. We examine the patterns of resource reconfigurations through which Yahoo and Google powered their early growth strategies in their first 10 years of existence. We analyze a total of 192 new product launches in 43 markets by the two firms to capture how they reconfigured resources dynamically. Our analysis reveals that both firms developed highly dynamic strategies exhibiting both surprising similarities and differences. These similarities and differences provided the basis for our theoretical insights about the development of what we term “dynamic resource platforms,” comprising of (a) dynamic resource shifts; (b) targeted resource orchestration; and (c) complementary processes balancing dynamism and capability development. These ideas contribute novel theoretical insights to current strategic management research on dynamic capabilities and on resource reconfiguration and redeployment.

Specific immunotherapy has shown to be very useful for allergy control in dogs, with a common success rate ranging from 65% to 70%. However, this efficacy could probably be improved and the identification of individual allergomes, with the choice of more adequate molecular allergen pools for specific immunotherapy, being the strategy. To map Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Der p) allergens for mite-sensitized atopic dogs, for better understanding how individual allergograms may influence the response to house-dust mite immunotherapy. To identify the Der p mite allergome for dogs, 20 individuals allergic to dust-mites and sensitized to Der p, were selected. The extract from Der p was submitted to isoelectric focusing (IEF), one-dimensional (1-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Separated proteins were blotted onto polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membranes and immunoblottings were performed with patient sera. Allergen-bo...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of two substrates (enamel and dentin) considering two study factors: type of composite resin [methacrylate-based (Filtek Supreme) or silorane-based (Filtek LS)] and aging time (24 h or 3 months). Twenty human molars were selected and divided into 2 groups (n=10) considering two dental substrates, enamel or dentin. The enamel and dentin of each tooth was divided into two halves separated by a glass plate. Each tooth was restored using both tested composite resins following the manufacturer's instructions. The samples were sectioned, producing 4 sticks for each composite resin. Half of them were tested after 24 h and half after 3 months. µTBS testing was carried out at 0.05 mm/s. Data were analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD tests at α=0.05. Significant differences between composite resins and substrates were found (p<0.05), but no statistically significant difference was found for aging tim...

Annual ryegrass is a temperate climate annual foraging grass, grown mostly in the South of Brazil, especially in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Despite its importance, little is known about its genetic diversity, both within and among the populations cultivated. This knowledge is of fundamental importance for developing breeding and conservation strategies. The aim of this study was to characterize the genetic diversity and structure of four populations of annual ryegrass. Three of the populations were located in Rio Grande do Sul and the fourth in Uruguay. RAPD markers were used to study the genetic diversity and structure of these populations. Analysis of 375 individuals sampled from the populations, using six RAPD primers, generated a total of 82 amplified bands. They included 73 polymorphic bands (89,02%). The value of the total genetic diversity index obtained, <IMG SRC="/img/revistas/sa/v61n4/22157s1.gif">(0,71) was high, indicating the presence of wide geneti...

The overproduction of reactive oxygen species plays an important role in the cascade of events during lung ischemia-reperfusion leading to graft failure. An evaluation of the peripheral markers of oxidative stress and antioxidant enzyme activities was carried out after reperfusion in a rat lung transplant model. The decrease in lipid peroxidation immediately after transplantation ( P < 0.05) may suggest an adaptative response and/or a protective effect of low potassium dextran against lipid peroxidation through natural scavenging mechanisms.
Clinical Relevance Under clinical conditions, delayed light activation of dual-cured resin cements may be advantageous in order to reduce shrinkage stress.

The serine protease HtrA2/Omi is released from the mitochondrial intermembrane space following apoptotic stimuli. Once in the cytosol, HtrA2/Omi has been implicated in promoting cell death by binding to inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) via its amino-terminal Reaper-related motif, thus inducing caspase activity, and also in mediating caspase-independent death through its own protease activity. We report here the phenotype of mice entirely lacking expression of HtrA2/Omi due to targeted deletion of its gene, Prss25 . These animals, or cells derived from them, show no evidence of reduced rates of cell death but on the contrary suffer loss of a population of neurons in the striatum, resulting in a neurodegenerative disorder with a parkinsonian phenotype that leads to death of the mice around 30 days after birth. The phenotype of these mice suggests that it is the protease function of this protein and not its IAP binding motif that is critical. This conclusion is reinforced by the ...
