To link seemingly abstract ideas-those of 'synopticism', 'reterotopia' and 'adiaphorization' for example-and the language of poet-intellectuals with events and consequences occurring in people's everyday lives, a selection of popular reality television shows and TV celebrities are considered. In its second part, the paper goes on to embrace intimations of hope. This is the hope that television can be used in experimental ways to stimulate moral consciousness. To further unpack this suggestion, the paper considers how television networks such as Channel 4, and shows such as Squid Games and Black Mirror, can excite moral impulses for the 'Other'. In its conclusions, the paper explores whether the presiding message of television can be different to encourage viewers to question what is right and wrong.

This text consists of three chapters. The author begins by outlining the similarities and differences between adiaphorisation in the two phases of modernity: ‘heavy’ (‘solid’) and ‘liquid’ (‘flexible’); the former was characteristic of the society of producers (workers and soldiers), while the latter was characteristic of the society of consumers. It then moves on to nationalism as a source of adiaphorization, which Bauman himself experienced personally as a leftwinger of Jewish origin. The final section focuses on the establishment of order and its collateral victims, including ‘flawed consumers’.

Robert Fisk is a based in Beirut foreign correspondent of London's newspaper “The Independent”. The text starts with Douglas Dowd’s differentiation between objectivity and neutrality and describes the issue of objectivity in social science. Then the author describes Fisk's statement on duties of a decent journalist, not only foreign correspondent in the Middle East: What journalism is really about is to monitor power and the centres of power. He criticizes cosy relations between media people and so-called reliable sources of information, i.e. government officials. In the summary the author hopes that this article could be useful in discussion on journalism ethics and journalism professionalism. Krytykuje on bliskie stosunki między ludźmi mediów a tzw. wiarygodnymi źródłami informacji, np. oficjelami rządowymi.
