The Open University has been teaching design at a distance for three decades. In this time delivery mechanisms have changed from non-interactive broadcasts to interactive media. A new generation of courses is emerging taught entirely online. This offers many challenges and opportunities This paper describes three tools that will be used in a new, level 1 course. Knowledge mapping, animated screen capture and an online studio space, OpenDesignStudio, which is a development of the Flickr photo-sharing interface. The advantage of the almost ubiquitous use of Web2 technologies is that students are communicating more and the potential for these technologies to support collaborative work in a learning environment is growing. The paper also discusses how assessment strategies might be re-considered to recognise and credit students who are increasingly using web resources to aid and augment their learning. The use of knowledge maps offers a way for students to bring together the materials t...

This paper discusses the preliminary results of a two-year JISC funded project entitled ATELIER-D: Achieving Transformation, Enhanced Learning and Innovation through Educational Resources in Design. The ATELIER-D project is based in the Design group at that Open University. The Open University is the largest distance teaching university in the UK. The design group, has around 1000 students a year studying its courses and materials are delivered in a variety of ways including print, online, course forums, and multi-media materials. There are six academics and a research assistand working on project, each of whom has, in the first year of the project, explored the use of different web2 based technologies to support student learning. The ATELIER-D project takes as its starting point the recognition that increasing numbers of Open University students are already using web2 interfaces such as Facebook,Skype and Secondlife. Increasingly familiarity with these interfaces is shaping the exp...

ABSTRACT This paper reports a number of patterns identified during the creation of elearning content within the Open University, the largest provider of distance higher education in the UK. The patterns identified relate to writing and content creation and the development of active learning exercises. The patterns were identified through a mix of self and external, observation and analysis.

Design studio education has been a leading pedagogical principle in design learning for over 100 years. Initially, the studio environment was seen as a collaborative environment in which students follow the work of their peers’ through formal presentations, critiques and informal conversations. In the recent past, research on design studios has lost sight of the social component in studio education in favour of concentrating on the tutor-students relationship. As the delivery of design education has moved into online environments, scholars have begun to recognise that social engagement with peers may be of a greater importance to students’ design learning than previously acknowledged. This paper explores the gap in our understanding of engagement and interaction by analysing quantitative and qualitative data from 317 students who were studying an online module in design thinking. The module facilitates learning akin to the design studio experience. An online environment allows stude...

This study looks at the qualities of learner-generated online content, as rated by experts, and how these relate to learners’ engagement through comments and conversations around this content. The work uploaded to an Online Design Studio by students across a Design and Innovation Qualification was rated and analysed quantitatively using the Consensual Assessment Technique (CAT). Correlations of qualities to comments made on this content were considered and a qualitative analysis of the comments was carried out. It was observed that design students do not necessarily pay attention to the same qualities in learner-generated content that experts rate highly, except for a particular quality at the first level of study. The content that students do engage with also changes with increasing levels of study. These findings have implications for the learning design of online design courses and qualifications as well as for design institutions seeking to supplement proximate design studios wi...

The use of virtual design studios (VDS) in practice-based STEM education is increasing but requires further research to inform understanding of student learning and success. This paper presents a longitudinal, large-scale study (3 years, 3000 students) of student behaviour in an online design studio used as part of a distance learning Design and Innovation qualification, within the School of Engineering and Innovation at The Open University (UK). The sample size and time period of the study is unprecedented and provides unique insights into student behaviours. Moderate correlations between overall VDS use and student success were identified in early stages of study but were weaker in later stages. Detailed results identify specific behaviour correlations, such as ‘listening-in’ (viewing other students’ work) and student success, as well as behaviour shifts from ‘passive’ to ‘active’ engagement. Strong intrinsic motivations for engagement were observed throughout and selected social ...

This paper discusses a participatory design approach developed by Design med Omtanke in Västra Gotaland, Sweden that has been successfully used for public sector building projects. The approach uses participatory design techniques alongside sustainable design, to design public spaces that meet stakeholder requirements, using sustainable products and materials. The paper reviews participatory design literature and positions the work described in relation to this. The context of the work is discussed and examples show the scalability of the approach. The conclusion is that the approach described can overcome problems frequently experienced by novice clients and can successfully be used to achieve sustainability objectives in a wide range of settings.
