I started life in Scotland, at St Andrews, where I lived until age 13. My parents moved to Perth, WA in 1970. After 3 years at school in Western Australia, I enrolled at the University of Western Australia. I graduated with 1st Class Honours in Classics and Ancient History in 1977 with a double major in Greek and Latin, and won the Rose and Cecil Owen Bequest Prize for the best Honours graduate in Classics and Ancient History. I was awarded a Commonwealth Postgraduate Scholarship for 1978 and enrolled in a Master’s thesis entitled An Historical Commentary on Suetonius’ Life of Gaius Caligula under the supervision of Professor Brian Bosworth. In early 1979 I became a Tutor in Classics at the University of Adelaide. Between 1982 and 1991 I had academic posts, at Victoria University of Wellington and University of Queensland before moving to University of Newcastle, where I am still based.edit

This offspring of Drusus, (he ill-fated son of the emperor Tiberius, has received scant attention from modern critics for reasons that are only too obvious. The materials for a biography are lacking, and it has been thought unquestionable that by the end of his life Tiberius had made plans for Caligula's succession.1 But was it so inevitable that Caligula would succeed to the throne in AD 37?2 Gemellus was one of twins bom to Liuia Julia in AD 20.3 Thc other twin, Germanicus Gemellus, did not outlive childhood.4 Nor did Drusus, thc father of the twins, and only son of Tiberius last beyond AD 23. After the fall of Sejanus in AD 31 rumour circulated that Drusus had fallen victim to a plot on thc part of Liuia Julia and Sejanus, and had been surreptitiously poisoned. Thc tale was given crcdcncc by information Sejanus' wife Apicata was supposed to have laid at Tiberius' door, and gossip that Tiberius had tortured slaves to confirm the information. The adultery of Liuia Julia and Sejanus has undoubtedly polluted the attitude of the sources, and little trust can be placed in any hostile comments about the personality of Liuia Julia/' But the impact of the adultery was sufficient to promote speculation that this had disadvantaged Gemellus in (he succession stakes since the child of an adulterous mother could be considered of dubious paternity.
