Geoheritage and geosites have been assessed as part of the work supporting the application of the... more Geoheritage and geosites have been assessed as part of the work supporting the application of the Oeste Aspiring Geopark, in West Central Portugal, for an UNESCO Global Geopark. The geological framework is presented, describing the regional evolution of the Lusitanian Basin, related to the Mesozoic opening of the North Atlantic, since the Late Triassic until the Late Cretaceous, followed by the Cenozoic inversion of the basin, related to the Alpine orogeny. The overall geodiversity of the territory is described, and the main geological highlights are presented. Within the scope and objectives of a Geopark, the criteria for the definition of geosites are presented and discussed. Geoconservation, geoeducation and geotourism have been considered to define 80 geosites, with different characteristics, purposes, relevance and potential. Six different encompassing themes have been defined, each one with a specific storytelling. Geoconservation issues are also addressed, showing the importance of protection strategies for the geosites at a local scale.

The Cabeço da Ladeira paleontological site in central Portugal became known as the “Jurassic Beac... more The Cabeço da Ladeira paleontological site in central Portugal became known as the “Jurassic Beach”. Formerly an active quarry, the site was protected in order to preserve the large exposures of a Middle Jurassic (early? Bajocian) carbonate tidal flat with an outstanding fossil record. This multidisciplinary paleontological work involving experts from several national and international research and geoconservation institutions was carried out under the umbrella of the Institute for Nature Conservation (ICNF), since this geosite is located within the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros nature park. Cabeço da Ladeira has provided exquisitely preserved body fossils, especially echinoderms, together with the exceptional preservation of their, and other, animal’s behaviors. It is also a hotspot to understand the diversity of bivalves in the Middle Jurassic. This material was initially described in 2006, but just a few was known. By comparing it modern ophiuroids, more was parts were classify. Modern studies on taphonomy of this animals permit to understand how the paleoenvironment was.

The first results of the systematic study based on disarticulated ossicles of the ophiuroids and ... more The first results of the systematic study based on disarticulated ossicles of the ophiuroids and crinoids from the Miocene of the Lower Tagus Basin are presented. In this stage of the study, the ophiuroid ossicles can only be assigned to the Class Ophiuroidea; the crinoid ossicles, reported for the first time in the Miocene of Portugal, are assigned to the Order Comatulida, which only includes unstalked crinoids.
