James Hugh Calum Laurie ialah seorang pelakon dan pemuzik dari Amerika Syarikat.
Awal hidup dan pendidikan
[sunting | sunting sumber]James Hugh Calum Laurie lahir di Blackbird Leys, Oxford pada 11 Jun 1959,[1][2] anak bongsu dan anak lelaki kedua empat adik-beradik[2][3][4] kepada Patricia (nama keluarga: Laidlaw) dan William George Ranald Mundell "Ran" Laurie, seorang doktor dan ahli sukan dayungyang memenangi pingat emas semasa temasya Sukan Olimpik Musim Panas 1948.[2][5] Kedua-dua ibubapanya keturunan Scotland anutan St. Columba's Presbyterian Church of England (kini United Reformed Church).[6]
Beliau melanjutkan pengajian tingginya di Kolej Eton[7] sebelum beralih ke Kolej Selwyn, Cambridge pada tahun 1978[7][8] wdi mana beliau mempelajari bidang arkeologi and antropologi[9] sehingga lulus ijazah di sana.[10]
Beliau terlibat sebagai seorang atelt sukan dayung untuk mengiikuti ayahnya pada peringkat sekolah dan universiti.[7] Beliau pernah dalam pasukan yang berjaya dalam acara beregu pada pertandingan peringkat kebangsaan British 1977.
Kerjaya lakonan
[sunting | sunting sumber]Beliau berhenti melibatkan diri dalam sukan dayung setelah beliau mengalami suatu penyakit demam disebabkan virus iaitu mononukleosis; lalu beliau memilih menyertai suatu kelab drama di universitinya iaitu Cambridge Footlights. Beliau mula berkenalana dengan Emma Thompson yang juga pernah menjadi kekasihnya;[11] dari hubungan inilah beliau turut diperkenalkan kepada Stephen Fry.
Kerjaya permuzikan
[sunting | sunting sumber]Beliau banyak menunjukkan bakat muziknya sepanjang kerjayanya sama ada dalam sktesa-sketsa A Bit of Fry & Laurie, Jeeves and Wooster, House malah juga semasa mengacara Saturday Night Live sebagai tetamu khas pada Oktober 2006. Beliau tidak sahaja pandai menyanyi, malah mahir bermain piano, gitar, dram, harmonika, and saksofon. Beliau merupakan vokalis dan pemain keyboard untuk Band From TV, sebuah kugiran bertujuan amal yang berpusat di Los Angeles .
Pada 26 Julai 2010, Laurie dimumkan bakal mengeluarkan suatu abum genre blues di bawah label Warner Bros. Records.[12] Album ini, Let Them Talk, menampilkan seberapa karya koaborasi bersama artis-artis tersohor dalam genre ini termasuk Tom Jones, Irma Thomas and Dr. John; ia diterbitkan di Perancis pada 18 April 2011 dan di Jerman pada 29 haribulan sama.
Album keduanya Didn't It Rain dterbitkan di UK pada 6 May 2013.[13]
