The collection of Museu Nacional do Azulejo (1949–1970)”. This research aims to contribute for the revaluation of this collection and to assess different methods to reach new and better ways to display, communicate and maximize approaches and interpretation of this patrimonial acquis. Four studies will be presented backed in different objects of the collection from Museu Nacional do Azulejo and the remaining panels in situ: a study for the panel The Sea, in Avenida Infante Santo, Lisbon; a panel by Menez for the Portuguese pavilion in the International and Universal Exhibition of Brussels, 1958; and a panel for the fair Comptoir Suisse in Lausanne, by Querubim Lapa and, by the same author, a ceramic plaque evoking the ceramic coating from Casa da Sorte (1963), in Lisbon.

With this case study we aim to reflect on various aspects that characterized the 1950s in particular: the presence of azulejo (tile) coating at ephemeral architectures of Portuguese pavilions in international events and the types of relationship between artists, interior designers and architects. We also would like to contribute to the study and re-evaluation of artists that, in this period of ceramic renovation, dedicated themselves to this form of expression in a more sporadic way, and therefore with a less known work, compared to the group of artists that used the azulejo as a privileged way of expression during the course of their artists path.

Abstract The starting point to this paper was a catalogue published by the Carvalhinho factory, in the second quarter of the 20th century, displaying patterned tiles inspired on Portuguese tiles from the 17th and 18th centuries. The paper aims to compare the industrial patterned drawings with the originals, which inspired them. To achieve this purpose, the authors utilized the ongoing project “Cataloguing Portuguese patterned tiles”, available online through the Az Infinitum – Azulejo Indexation and Reference System. The study of the factory’s catalogue gave the authors the possibility to discuss questions linked with the inventory and cataloguing options, as well as the relation between these commercial publications, its dissemination, and the tiles’ application in buildings. Ovar was the county selected as a case-study. The paper ends with a reflexion about the revivals in tiles, and, particularly, revivals in patterned tiles.

The main goal is the study of the patterned tiles from the 17th century, exploring the documentation as well as the ideas and solutions invented by the tile-layers that applied the tiles on the walls. Also, the authors aim to introduce the new information system for the Portuguese azulejos’ inventory, named Az Infinitum - Azulejo Indexation and Reference System, available online.
