I do not use generative "ai" in my work. I actively avoid using tools which include generative "ai", or tools which allow generated code into their codebase. Everything is written (poorly) by me, a real human that is capable of propositional knowledge. I do this for a number of reasons, including but not limited to:

  • The things it makes are tacky. Aesthetically they are lacking.
  • It's anti labor. It is a tool of management to replace real workers with plausible text generators that produce sub par work
  • The environmental impact is huge. We need to be using less energy and less clean water, not pumping everything we have into training plausible text generators
  • The real cost is much higher than what is being paid for it now. Some day investors will want their money, and suddenly it would just cost less to hire all those workers again
  • The thing we're calling "ai" is to the concept of artificial intelligence what the HoverBoard™ is to the concept of a hover board

This list is not exhaustive. I'll probably add to it every time I think of something about generative "ai" that pisses me off.
