In 2007 I had the chance to direct Brundibar ,a children’s opera by the Czech composer  Hans  Krasa,  as  part  of  a  project  carried  out  at  the  Juiz  de  Fora  Military College (CMJF) in Brazil. At face value, it seems trivial: one more school music project. However, the context within which the opera acquired renown –that of the Holocaust –broadens the project’s reach. This context produced profound reflections on the links between ethics and aesthetics, particularly when it came to remember –with children – traumatic events that themselves involved so many youngsters. This article reports on that experience.

This paper reflects on the poetical elements presen t in mystical discourse. The idea is to highlight the poetical characteristics of mystic al texts. In doing so, the article asks which the mystical elements of poetry are. Another question is also raised: if it is possible to talk about poetics of mystic, is it pos sible to consider the existence of a mystical poetic? Considering the mystical discourse as the result of an experience with the Sacred, is there a transcendental experien ce expressed in poetry considered profane? For the establishment of this poetic of my sticism, the texts analyses some mystical poems: a psalm from the Bible and a poem from a Brazilian poetry that does not belong to a specific religion tradition. The re sult of this analysis is presented as a possible poetic of mysticism. Furthermore, the aspe ct of transgression of the language, present in poetry, is shown as an express ion of the mystic of poetry.

This paper aims to identify some of the elements which should help clarify what is meant by ‘defence diplomacy’ (or ‘military diplomacy’) and how this diplomatic tool has been used in the context of Brazil. As this discussion is still is in its early stages, the goal will be to make a conceptual contribution toward a better definition of the term, especially considering the case of Brazil. Based on the examination of how the term has been empirically used in the history of the Brazilian Armed Forces, this text will demonstrate the extent to which Brazil’s international relations may benefit from defence diplomacy, in articulation with the foreign policy. Keywords: Defence Diplomacy. Military Diplomacy. Brazilian Navy. Soft Power. Projection of Power. ________________________________________________________________________________ DIPLOMACIA DE DEFESA E SEU POTENCIAL PARA O BRASI RESUMO Neste texto procura-se identificar alguns elementos que ajudam a esclarecer o que se chama de dipl...

On the 11th December 1964, the musical Opiniao directed by Augusto Boal premiered at the ‘Teatro Arena’ in Rio de Janeiro. The show was considered a protest against the socioeconomic situation in Brazil and became a reference to what would be known as protest music against the regime, which established itself in Brazil in March that same year. In this text, we will attempt to analyse how this show substantiated the various social and political demands at the time, and how it became an aesthetic and political paradigm. At the same time, we will compare the original production with a re-interpretation of the spectacle in 2014, organized by the Moreira Salles Institute, with the participation of the group Casuarina and the singer Joyce. The aim is to understand how, fifty years after the coup d’etat and the show Opiniao, Brazilian music and art not only reflect that historical moment, but also its role in the contemporary socio-political context.

This text is a hermeneutic exercise about one of the paradigmatic works of Vinicius de Moraes, Orfeu da Conceição. This plays opens a partnership between the poet and the composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, which was fruitful and unique for Brazilian arts. Orfeu da Conceição is also paradigmatic because it is the first work to bring black actors to the stages of the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro. Orfeu da Conceição led to one of the films that most contributed, positively or negatively, to the international image of Brazil in the second half of the 20th century, the award-winning Orpheus Negro, by Marcel Camus. The text will notice how many of the ideas and representations of the favela were already visible in the Brazilian popular repertoire prior to the composition of the play. The idea, in general, is to observe how, in addition to its poetic-musical quality, Orfeu da Conceição can also serve as a reflection on how we represent and see favelas in the urban context, both in 1956 ...

Originally published in 1882, in the collection of short-stories Papéis Avulsos, A Sereníssima República has as central theme the description of the political corruption, especially in the electoral context. The story also discusses how an ideal model (e.g. democracy), even if just, can be distorted in different ways, when subjected to practice. Also, the narrative shows all possible tricks of acquisition and retention of power. On the use of different textual resources: it is a tale, with the typical structure of this genre, which tells of a conference of Cônego Vargas that disseminates the scientific discovery about the world of spiders, with all the philosophical and scientific rigor inherent in this type of discourse. At this moment the text acquires the characteristics of a fable. With a distinctive wit and irony, the writer develops a critical reflection about the popular consultation and the consequent irregular political manipulation of this process. On the basis of Machado ...
