The concept of social cohesion has received much attention in recent academic research as well as in policy documents. The aim of this paper is to point out the shortcomings of current indicators for social cohesion and the advantages of including time allocation data in the evaluation and measurement of social cohesion. Such data should include, for example, time spent on household work and family care or time spent on voluntary and civic activities. The paper is organised as follows: first, the Eurostat and OECD social cohesion indicators are discussed in relation to concepts of social cohesion. In section two, some aspects of social cohesion are associated with time allocated to various activities and it is argued that time use data, in some cases, provide a more accurate measure of social cohesion. In section three, empirical results are presented for European countries using indicators that illustrate social cohesion, and time use data are combined with current social cohesion indicators. Finally, conclusions are presented.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had severe and unprecedented consequences in multiple facets of education. Schools, teachers, students and their families were affected and the negative impacts will last for years. The aim of this paper is to identify and explain the sources and consequences of teachers' job stress and burnout during the pandemic as well as job and life satisfaction. Three sources of stress are emphasised: time allocation changes and workload; the behaviour of students; and the technostress. The empirical research is based on an original online survey applied to middle and high school teachers in Portugal. Information from four time references is collected: before pandemic; first school closure in 2020 (16th Mar – 16th Sep); second school in 2021 (15th Jan – 5th Apr)); at the time of the survey (June-July 2021) The data obtained include characteristics and changes about: teachers and their households; job satisfaction, stress and burnout; life satisfaction; working tim...

This paper examines the determinants of the age of hiring of older workers in Portugal. The Portuguese case is particularly relevant to study because the level of participation in the labor market for older workers is about six times higher when compared with European countries. The empirical analysis uses Quadros de Pessoal (Tables of Personnel) Portuguese micro database, employer-employee matched files. Specifically, we use data of workers with more than 50years old and hired during the previous 5years, splitting the cross-section sample according to firm size. The tested explanatory variables are related to employee, job and firm characteristics. The results show that some determinants of the age of hiring are similar to those obtained previously for other countries. Additionally, sectors of activity with specific private occupational pensions plans affect the hiring of old workers and there are signs of changes in the hiring behavior in last years, probably associated with recent changes in social security laws. Furthermore, the results are relevant for policy design since they identify the sectors and jobs where opportunities for hiring older workers are higher.

A virtual Community of Practice (CoP) is a network of individuals who share a domain of interest about which they communicate online. The practitioners share resources (for example experiences, problems and solutions, tools, methodologies). Such communication results in the improvement of the knowledge of each participant in the community and contributes to the development of the knowledge within the domain. A virtual learning community may involve the conduct of original research but it is more likely that its main purpose is to increase the knowledge of participants, via formal education or professional development. Virtual learning communities could have learning as their main goal or the e-learning could be generated as a side effect. Virtual communities of practice (CoPs) and virtual learning communities are becoming widespread within higher education institutions (HEIs) thanks to technological developments which enable increased communication, interactivity among participants ...

The main goal of this paper is to illustrate how to construct innovative indicators which contribute to a better knowledge of cohesion and convergence across Europe and the identification of the roles (e.g. centralit y, reciprocity) performed by the several entities (countries, regions, institutions, individuals, enterprises, etc.) in European networks mapped by demographic, economic, financial and communication flows or links. Adopting network analysis, derived from graph theor y, and exploring data from the European Statistical System (ESS) related with flow s of people, capital, goods or information, network indexes are computed (e.g. den sity, centrality). The empirical illustrations include networks which differ in size , scope, aggregation level, and nature (population migration, student and teacher t emporary mobility, direct foreign investment). The new indicators proposed here can be produced on a regular basis and are summary measures which will complement and improve the ...

This short paper describes work in progress on the C2 Learn project intended to create a Virtual Community of Learning (CoL) in two European Universities in different countries (United Kingdom and Portugal) and then to develop its use. The teams are conducting literature reviews on virtual CoLs in general and on their respective countries in particular. In addition the teams are researching and exchanging information about each others’ institutions, facilitated by prior collaborative work and independent research discussing aspects of e-learning within their respective establishments. As a result of previous collaborative work (Gannon-Leary & Fontainha 2008) the teams have identified and examined the benefits, barriers and critical success factors relating to Communities of Practice (CoPs). Now they are revisiting these in the context of CoLs.

Support systems are vital for university entrants and one established means of support is peer mentoring which has the potential to improve student engagement and retention. Mentoring models are generally based on face-to-face contact. However, given the increasing number of higher education institutions using social media, might online models be beneficial in a support context? This paper by means of examining extant literature complemented by a case study considered three virtual models: social networking sites (SNS), virtual learning environments (VLE) and virtual worlds. Findings indicated that the social networking model had the most potential. A pilot study by business programmes at Northumbria University is now being undertaken. Technical issues have been encountered and overcome. However, further analysis is required to fully establish the long term viability and potential extensions to the model.

The research aims to study the distribution of hourly wages for men and women in Portugal, adopting a quantile regression (QR) approach. Two databases are used for the estimation of the wage functions: the Quadros de Pessoal, Linked Employer-Employee Data (QP-LEED) and the Inquerito ao Emprego, Portuguese Labour Force Survey (IE-LFS). Three basic models are considered to explain the hourly wages for men and women: the first model, using each database separately, is estimated adopting education, tenure, potential experience, activity sector, and job as independent variables; the second, using data from QP-LEED, includes additional determinants related to firm (firm size and foreign social capital); and the third, using data from the IE-LFS, includes additional independent variables related to the worker's family (marital status and children). The results indicate that: (i) Regardless of the database used, the quantile regression (QR) shows superiority over OLS approach; (ii) In g...

We focus on a number of idiosyncrasies of cultural and creative entrepreneurs (CCEs) to study CCEs’ capacity of resilience under times of downturn (economic, financial and debt crisis). We analyse CC firms’ demography (born and dead), trends and performance and the association between subsidies received and firm survival. We look at mostly micro firms in a country where CCEs are particularly challenged from the financial perspective, namely Portugal. We exploit the unique availability of accounting micro data at private firm level in a time span of 8 years (2004-2011), which allows to include the effects of the latest financial crisis, and to understand the evolution of the economic success criterion. The obtained results about the impact of subsidies on survival are interesting in both CCEs and policy perspectives, suggesting a positive impact of subsidies in periods of downturn, and negative impact of subsidies in periods of growth of the economy. Further, CC firms revealed to be ...

The use of the Internet is particularly well suited to the teaching and learning of economics, not only because many of the phenomena that are studied by economics are well documented on the Web but also because the interaction concerning models, graphics and programs clearly pays results. Economics can therefore benefit immensely from the use of the new technologies, possessing some characteristics that allow further uses of the Internet besides those, which are also worth exploring by other disciplines. Post secondary education sharply increased the Internet adoption last years for educational, research and administrative goals, affecting pedagogical processes, educational institutions policies. Because of the higher availability of material recourses and human skills, the Internet adoption by the universities and colleges was faster than by other educational levels. The usage of the Internet on face-to-face university education depends on material resources (for example computer ...

The aim of this study is to understand and explain different dimensions of absorptive capacity and the strategies used in practice to realise it. The theoretical and conceptual contribution of the study lies in the adoption of a dual process and structure approach, aiming at identifying, respectively, how learning takes place and what learning takes place. The study is based upon a case study research design to explore the manifestation of absorptive capacity processes and its relationship to knowledge structures in four company case studies. The findings of the research indicate that knowledge acquisition, transformation and integration involve successive iterations of codification, abstraction and diffusion of knowledge in relation to product concepts, process requirements and problem-solving approaches. This relates to the capability to adopt, simultaneously, different trajectories in terms of knowledge exploration and knowledge exploitation strategies. The combined adoption of t...
